Just wondering what the main differences was between the two. I know they sometimes offer different deals. Say I have it installed from a local mom and pop satalite dealer, if I want programming changes made or new equipment can I still call directv themselves or do I have to keep calling the local dealer?

Years ago when I got DirecTV I initially bought it from Circuit City. Since then I have always contacted DirecTV directly for any new programing changes or equipment. You can get better deals on upgrades, if you deal directly with them, and are a good customer.

For programming changes you would either change your acct online or call into DIRECTV. The advantage of the local dealer is they usually guarantee their install for 12 months, whereas the D* subcontractors usually have a 90 day warranty for the most part. If you are considering signing up, Best Buy has a great deal going now with $30 off a month your bill for at least 3 months, on top of any DIRECTV discounts.

Most of the times a dealer can offer you the same deals as the mothership.

Dealers often have more experienced techs, can spend more time on an install, are available on shorter notice, can often do more complicated setups [ SWM, pole mounts, tripods, etc ] and provide better customer service.

But I have seen pretty bad jobs from them also.

Go with a local dealer. Ordering online can get you a crappy install. Local dealers will come fix problems and not charge you. Mine has been great. I can and do also call the main company to make changes. Either way works in that regard.

I picked my local installer rather than accept the company I knew DirecTV would send me. I got the equipment through him, too. I did have to pay an extra $79 to my guy, which really was mostly a travel charge as he wasn't near by, but otherwise I got the same deal I could have gotten by calling in. But this way I was in control of my install. I had somebody local to call with questions and I knew exactly what was going to happen.

It was the best decision I ever made with DirecTV. $79 well spent.
