When the D* installer came out and hooked up my HR20, he indicated that OTA wasn't currently active and I needed to leave the OTA cable disconnected for now, saying it would cause some kind of interference until OTA is actually actived in the receiver.

I believe I've gone through all the menu options, but couldn't see where the OTA setting is? Does the OTA cable actually need to be attached to view this setting? And is there really any issue with connecting the OTA cable before OTA has been activated in the receiver?

Thanks,
Ron

The OTA item is in Setup and it is greyed out. Yes, you can connect your OTA antenna now...I've had mine connected for 7 weeks ...the idea that it would cause problems is one of the dumbest comments I've seen by an installer yet.

Play around with your setup menus (you need to get familiar with it anyway and it's sort of fun) and you will find the OTA...it will be grey...you can't do anything with it.

OTA is very, very close to being turned on.

There shouldn't be any issue connecting the OTA now (mine has been connected to my HR20 for over 2 months now). The OTA menu options should be under Satellite & Antenna or something like that under the setup options. Like your installer said, it isn't enabled yet and will appear grayed out in the menu. The OTA options will show up whether an OTA antenna is connected or not.

Edit: Hasan beat me to it, feh... :p

If you look in setup under sat & ant, it's currently greyed out.

I don't think you'll be able to select it in the menus. When it becomes available, you'll have to go through the setup procedure again and you will be able to select the OTA option at that time.

It would be interesting if there were a correlation between whether OTA was hooked up and having problems.

OTA has it's own setup logic... which is independent of the SAT dish setup.
When enabled, you will be able to set it up on it's own.

You won't have to go through the entire setup process again.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll connect the OTA cable when I get home this evening, and look to see where OTA is in the menus.

I basically had the 0xEB update since the HR20 was installed. And although I didn't go through nearly all the recevier's features, what I did do and try worked without any problems for me. Maybe I should just leave OTA un-plugged until it's actually activated? Although I am curious to see how the new 0xEF update looks when I get home. :)

How will the HR20's guide handle OTA if you can receive not only the locals commonly associated with your geographic location, but also locals that you can pull in form a neighboring location.

For example. I live in Ft. Lauderdale, which is assigned to Miami/Fort Lauderdale stations. MY OTA antenna also pulls in a second Fox and a second NBC from West Palm Beach. Will these "extra" channels show up in the HR20's guide, or will they be blocked since I am not "officially" in their market?

The HR20 (as was the HR10), is able to work with TWO OTA markets.

By "law" if you can receive it with an OTA antenna, you are legally able to view the programming.

Thanks for light speed response, Earl.

Another one: for local OTA channels, will the HR20's guide simply use what is transmitted by the local station, or will D* supplement this data? The OTA channels often transmit very basic program descriptions, if any at all. (I'm referring to what is displayed on my TV with the antenna connected direcctly to the TV's tuner.) If the transmitted data is used, and not some overlayed data from D*, I see this playing some serious havoc in our recordings, especially SLs.

Just like the previous versions that have used OTA (H20 and HR10).

If DirecTV is supplied with guide data for that channel, it will provide the data for the channel. It doesn't use the guide data in the PSIP data stream.

Found the greyed out "Antenna" menu option, thanks.

A question not really related to this thread, but I don't think it merits a new one - will the HR20 record even though it's turned off? Couldn't find this in the manual.

The only way to turn it off is to pull the plug. It goes into standby when you hit the power button, and yes, it will record when in standby.
