I was at a friends house last nite and we were watching the hockey game ,and then when it was over my friend said Oh;Is your sat. sys. doing this !!! On the 101 sat. 0n 2 and 4 he got 771 ,got 5 and on and off 7. I said no and that you have a weak signal(your dish is off a little bit).He said of course NO way and I told him to go to Sat strengths 101--was in the 70;s and the other 2 were in the 90;s so 1 said-- sat is off. I said we could fix it on saturday,What is the best way to fix it : put it on the 101 signal strengths and fine tune it till we get it back in the 90's and then check the other sat.strenghs too and make sure they are still in the 90;s or !!!!! I will have to go on the roof as my friend has a back condition. What is the easiest way without phoning D for a service call,Thanks

If the point/goal is to fine tune the dish, I do this off either 99c or 103c, since these are the narrower beams, so I find the center of them easier.
Doing this, has the 101 also in its center, which might be more centered than trying to do it off the 101, because it's a wider beam.
Thanks VOS;I just phoned him and asked him to check 99 and 103 and they were in the 60's ---pretty low---So what you were saying is leave it on the 99 or 103and fine tune there because it is smaller beam--right!!!!

Bingo!
Makes sense !!!! Thanks alot VOS---Now I know why I wasn;t actually really fine tuning---Now I gotta go do mine too !!!

You were fine tuning, but maybe not as well as you can.
I dither mine and detune until the numbers drop a good 10+, then find the other side where they drop the to the same number. split the number of turns in half and move it back that amount. Both AZ & EL, done!
put it on signal meter, dont use the transponder numbers

Where does the 'signal meter' get its measurement? :)

I know what you're getting at, I'm not sure that the op will.

all you will need is a 1/2 inch wrench. unloosen the 2 side bolts and the 2 bottom bolts. from the sounds of it they might already be loose , techs forget to tighten them when done fine-tuning sometimes. other thing to look for is the mast sturdy? wiggle it around it shouldnt move. theres bolts that hold the 2 monopole braces together make sure they are tight. then i would just put your buddy on cellphone and put on 99c to one of the lowest transponders you see, and peak it as high as you can. then have him switch to 103 and see what you have. best would be to use a meter like Jodean said , but you should get good results like you are doing. Those numbers are low so whatever you do will be an improvement. also just turn like 1/2 turn at a time and wait a few seconds for readings to catch up. good luck

Dithering takes so little time and when you're done, you know you've found the center, and it also works with SWiMLNBs, so it's a good habit to get into.
Thanks vos; We did his and it took about an hour with him inside and me out. Did just what you said and peaked his dish in about 1/2 hour. He was so pleased --He said he never even got some of these stations for awhile. Then we went to my place. I checked up and down and it was off and I had some playin it as i only had 1 monopole on my dish. Well I loosened the base and added another monopole and then tightened everything down when it was right. Then we did the same thing we did at his house and within 15 min. we were done!!! Thanks for everyones help and we are both THANKFUL.Maybe next year I will get the hr 34 and I will continue to ask for help here,Awesome site--Thanks again---Dobok
Just an update:It rained the other night and my phone rang.It was my neighbor saying--THANK YOU ALL AGAIN--his picture never went out once while they were watching and it poured pretty good.
