Owned leased SD box

1016 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Thaedron
I need to add a SD box. Naturally I'm looking for a good deal. I don't care so much if the box is owned or leased. I just want to know what I'm buying before I buy it. Any way to tell. I'd buy an older box if I knew if would be owned insted of lease, assuming I didn't have to pay more. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, here's the latest and greatest SD receiver out. This price is for a lease.

owned (From Directv) is $149.00
You can probably buy a used D11 or D12 from a variety of sources. Be very careful if you do. Get the receiver ID number (RID) and the access card number, and call DirecTV and confirm if it is owned or leased before buying it. If it is owned, and the account it is coming from is in good standing, you can buy it and own it.

Or, you can get a D12 from DirecTV, Best Buy, Circuit City, Solid Signal, Value Electronics, and other sources. If you do, that would be a leased unit (regardless of what you pay for it).

Wether you own it or lease it you are going to pay $5/mo. for having it added to your account.
AND, the difference between having the unit owned/leased is wether your contract is "supposed" to be renewed. While many will argue that its not supposed to be renewed either way, according to DirecTV:

New activation of a standard receiver leased is 18Mo commitment
advanced receiver leased is 24Mo commitment

Owned boxes arent supposed to renew your commitment (although they sometimes do, at no fault to the CSR)
If you have been a sub for a while, why not call Directv and see if they will give you one? They very well might...

In which case it would be a lease, not owned. Good advice, inkahuts!

It would also trigger an 18 month commitment from activation date.
I haven't been with DirecTV very long. Its not that I want to own the box for any dumb reason. I just don't want to pay the same for a leased box if I can get a owned box for the same price. Other than that I just want to know what I'm buying without having to get numbers from seller and call them in to DirecTV.

I was hoping all D11's were customer equipment and it would be easy to pick up last generations box for cheap and own it.
Leasing started March 2006 that was the tail end of the D10 start of the D11 time period. Anything with the Directv Brand could be a leased receiver. How many receivers do you currently have on your system? Do you have a multiswitch with open ports to add to?

Ok, thanks for the info. Yes I have a multiswitch with open ports.

Are you saying that if I purchase a receiver from Best Buy, for example, it would be considered a leased unit?

Yes, newly "purchased" equipment from retail outlets are actually leased units. The signage and/or box should indicate as such.
