Does anyone know why the pause button on the remote now actually starts the program that is currently highlighted in your list instead of pausing the video in the small window on the screen. I used to always pause that so I could think without having to listen to whatever was playing to make up my mind what I wanted to watch.

It would be okay I guess if it did nothing, but why the heck should the pause button start playing a program.

The latest version of the firmware for these boxes has taken away all trickplay functionality while in the PIG (program in guide). Lots of discussion of all the changes in the PIG operation/functionality in various threads.

...and no, it's not coming back.

Supposedly the changes are being made because DIRECTV is introducing new remotes that don't have color keys (except for RED) and thus some changes needed to be made.

It is extremely frustrating for three DIRECTV households in my family that we all need to relearn how to use our existing "legacy" remotes, and since these legacy remotes are in the hands of hundreds of thousands of other DIRECTV customers it's surprising to me that DIRECTV made the decision not to support the old remote with the new.

Maybe I'll be even more surprised if there's something better coming that will explain the decision to remove trick-play from the PIG. Maybe.

I understand that there is talk about removing most of the color buttons. But I don't think that pressing the pause button while in the Playlist should start playing a recording. And I really don't agree with removing buttons, since they should actually be adding buttons for PIP functions on the HR34. Or maybe using the color buttons to handle the PIP functions.

Yes, that is my main complaint as well, not that they removed the functionality, but that the functionality that replaced it is idiotic. Pause button should not equal start playing.

It looks like future remote controls will have one button that pauses and plays. That seems to be really popular in marketing tests. So it makes sense to combine that functionality now.

Another new nonsense "feature" that they added with the new GUI is pressing the LEFT button while on the channel info block drops you out of the list altogether (it used to give an error "BOOP" and do nothing). If you're moving to the left in the list and accidently overshoot, you're out of the list. I think they turned the programming of the new GUI over to a bunch of chimps at some point.

Stuart, can you please go ahead and close this thread. I didn't realize there was already a thread open that is discussing this exact problem. Thanks for your help and previous response.
