Wow, people watch that channel... :D

Well doesn't make sense to me, but sounds like its staying. I wonder if any of the channels they are adding are now not going to happen....

So explain to me why I have my local and national Pax, but can't have local and national NBC/ABC/CBS/PBS. That's a rhetorical question, I know the real answer, it just makes no sesnse. I don't need to see "Supermarket Sweep" two times a day. Ugh!

And for sports, I'm sure that more people sub to Directv to get sports programming than subscribe to see PAX. Just a guess.

PAX owns majority of its stations.

As for NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX they make much revenue in local advertising along with national advertising. Its a great combination they've got going. The PAX stations dont make nearly any revenue when you compare PAX 61 to ABC 6. The networks also have network affiliation agreements, and the networks have a 35% cap that they cant reach over 35% of the nation's TV HH through their own owned stations. So there are station groups like Hearst Argyle, Clear Channel, Belo, Sinclair, Young Broadcasting, Emmis Broadcasting, Quorom Broadcasting, Gray Communications with stations carrying network programs. They are affiliated stations.

I believe Viacom (owner of CBS) and FOX are slightly over the cap. What I dont get is if PAX is considered a Network now, how come the ownership caps arent being applied to PAX? With Univision, I do know Entravision owns or operates many Univision stations. NBC and PAX are binded together though, I believe NBC has a 32% stake in PAX. PAX was upset that NBC acquired Telemundo because then NBC couldnt acquire PAX (what PAX wanted).

The only reason national Univision wasnt dropped was because UNI never gave DirecTV an indication that they wouldnt request mustcarry to keep the national feed carried (what PAX did). Also Echostar and Hughes want to push forward the merger for Hispanic viewers so wouldnt do anything to disrupt their services.

Brett, PAX isn't considered a National Network yet. It takes a statement from the FCC. It took the FCC a year after FOX qualified to issue a statement that FOX was indeed a National Network.

PAX never wanted NBC to acquire it. PAX wants to be rid of NBC and NBC doesn't want to sell. According to Variety an arbitration judge ruled that NBC can not be forced to sell it's minority stake in the company. PAX wanted to force NBC to sell after it aquired part of Telemundo.

There are ways around the the ownership cap. 1/4 of PAX stations are actually not owned by PAX, Class A station ownership by PAX makes it liik like they have more stations than they really have, and setting up "puppet" organizations like Paxson of West Virginia where the Network has a minority interest in the station keeps it below the ownership limit.

First of all if Tanya Memme is on Ch. 201 that explains why people watch. I would watch her too if I could. Second there is no national NBC/CBS/or ABC to get.

Third we are taking this way too seriously. It is TV.

I read Paxson wanted it happen either NBC purchase them outright altogether (for a nice price though) or lose their 32% in them.

NBC cant do the first because of the Telemundo acquisition now.

http://www.nahj.org/media/hmr121001.html

"NBC bought 32% of Paxson in 1999 for $415 million with an option to buy a controlling stake within 10 years. NBC would not be able to take controlling interest in Paxson if the network acquires Telemundo because it would violate Federal Communications Commission regulations. "

"Paxson Communication Corporation also opposes NBC's acquisition of Telemundo, citing breach of contract. It is asking the FCC to block the acquisition or force NBC to drop its relationship with the network."

Will FCC likely make UNI and PAX national networks next year?

If I had to guess it will probably be right before the Fall 2003 TV Season. FOX was announced as a National Network right before a Fall TV Season and after 12 months of providing 15 hours of original Prime Time interconnected programming to 25 or more stations in 10 or more states.

Now if we could just get Dr.Quin, Touched, and Diagnosis replaced with original programming :)

Dr. Quinn and Touched left PAX for Hallmark. Diagnosis Murder is still on PAX. Family Feud reruns with Louie Anderson now began on PAX. On WGTW and WWOR, the New (and better version) Family Feud airs with Al from Home Improvement.

Yes they distribute their feed to stations but that is not a national CBS in the sense that there is a NATIONAL PAX ststion on cable and satellite systems. The feeds you are talking about are not intended to be broadcast by themselves----though C band types have been watching for years.

CBS, FOX and NBC are now digital on c-band. It cost $5000 to get the receiver to get the programming. Only programming on c-band is ABC and that's scrambled when sports isn't on the air.

In other words Mike there is no national feed available to consumers. There is just a feed that goes to the stations
