Phone Line

How do most of you hook a phone line to your D* receiver? I don't have access to a phone line anywhere near my receivers and will need to run a new line to get connected.

Anyone have any tricks or tried any of the wireless jacks out there?

Wireless jacks work great. You can pick them up just about anywhere. If you're going to have multiples I recommend keeping the base unit and receiving unit as close as possible to each other. Don't get suckered into fancy packaging. Any wireless phone jack that supports 56k fax will work. There are always different levels of quality with products but some that you see "satellite certified" in stores can cost $20 more and it's the same thing.
You don't really need a phone connection. Since your DVRs are networked, you don't need a phone line to order PPV movies with your remote control. So the only feature you'll miss is on-screen Caller ID.
I used to have a wireless jack setup, then I hard wired in a phone line.

All I use it for is caller ID.

How does this work? If you don't have a phone line, and your DVR is not connected to the internet, and you live in the boonies without any wireless nearby... how does the DVR send information to D*? What is the return path?

I keep hearing about being "networked" but don't understand how the DVR could send a PPV request to D* if there's no return path.

Thanks.
Usually networked implies that there is an internet connection present.

There needs to be an internet connection, which serves as the return path.

You are correct though, since some might have their DVRs networked but not connected to the internet.

I hear of folks that cell phone friends who have internet to get PPV stuff ordered.......Or you can cell phone DTV directly....still five bucks extra I think.
Order on line and the PPV runs on all your receivers. There are some changes coming.

That's what the satellite data stream is for. If you call DirecTV to order a PPV movie, for example, they send a signal via the satellite data stream to enable that movie on your Receiver. In this case there's no "return path" because they already know to bill you for the movie.
