The HR34 PIP operation seems counterintuitive to me.

When PIP is activated the current show being viewed goes goes into PIP and a new main picture is activated.

This is the opposite of every PIP I have ever used. I think the new program should show up in the PIP.

Any thoughts?

I agree, put the new program into the PIP screen and keep the current program on the main screen.

Also, make the "dash" button an instant on/off PIP toggle. ;) (Since they are taking away the color buttons.)
There has to be a better implementation than the current procedure to activate PIP. It's so clumsy right now, it prevents me from even using the feature.

Either way is fine...once I broike the code it is fine. Agree that single button "PIP on/off" would be a plus. But all things considerewd it is a great feature and worth the $$ for the new box.

I know that getting PIP to turn on and off is clunky and that has been discussed in other threads.

What I am trying to figure out in this thread is why directv has the current program you are watching go into the PIP.

Personal Opinion: Not a DIRECTV statement

To me, I view as...

You want to watch this second show right now, assuming the current one is in a break or commercial. So it goes to the PIP window. Then you are on the main display to navigate to the channel that you want as your second viewing channel.

With the down arrow being the toggle...

With the advent of DVRs and trick play across a wide spectrum of DIRECTV® subs, I wonder if the popularity of PIP has diminished, at least in that group.

I have PIP in my LR plasma, but almost never use it.

The popularity of PIP diminished when cable/satellite co's started encrypting channels. Then you had to pay for 2 receivers/dvr's, one to drive the main picture and a second for PIP. And if your going to have an additional receiver, you now can buy a small LCD in place of your PIP. Which doesn't block part of the picture on your main screen.

On the original post, since there is no way to change the channel in the PIP, it actually works better for me the way it works. When I'm watching something, then want to see what else is on, I can change the channel to what I'm interested in. Then swap it back to watch the original program. And if it wasn't for the macros I created on my AR remote to turn PIP on and off, I would be less inclined to use it.

That is probably the reason directv has it currently setup. You currently cannot change the PIP channels.

OMG That reminds me of the original ******* PIP. A small black and white TV on top of a big console.
Its hard to balance a 20" LCD on top of a 50" Plasma. Some sports fans on this form have 4+ flat screens in one room, so what do you call them? I actually use my 17" laptop with DIRECTV2PC to watch a second game.

Exactly.

I was used to the other way, but am now used to the way D*s PIP works. Honestly, I'm fine either way, but if I had to choose (which this poll made me do), I'd choose the way D* currently has it implemented, just because it's easier to see the main screen when I'm looking for a secondary program (guide, list, etc.) to select. If the program I was watching stayed on the main screen, I'd have to surf the guide in that little PIP window.

Now of we could just get that one button PIP on/off toggle. ;)

Yes....

and the ability to switch the audio without switching the video....

and the ability to change the size of the PIP window (small, med, large)....

and the ability to move the PIP window around the screen in multiple positions....

PIP disappears when I am in the guide. So I can't see the program I am watching.
