Two days ago, recorded an afternoon game. Went to playback about 2 hours into it, and got the black screen and message 'do you want to delete this recording'. Could not ff/rw/resume/start over. Recording was gone. Did a reboot hoping to solve the problem.

Yesterday I was able to watch/playback several items. However last evening, we were watching a recorded show (which was still in the process of recording), while recording a concurrent show. When we were done watching the first show still in recording process, went to delete, and it froze up, in the 'wait' process. Turning unit off then on did nothing, did not respond to remote. Had to reboot. Went to play back the second show, and got the black screen/delete message again.

All strengths are good.

Hoping to avoid a lengthy phone call to Directv, as well as getting charged for our 2nd HDDVR in a year.....

It may or may not be a problem with the B-Band Converters. Usually this is symptomatic of an intermittent reception problem, or weak satellite signals on one or both DVR tuners.

Please post back with your signal readings for each satellite's transponders (and both tuners if applicable). You'll find these readings under "Menu" -> "Setup" -> "System Setup" -> Satellite -> "View Signal Strength". Note the "+" and "-" symbols next to the "Satellite" and "Tuner" entries where you can toggle the readings between the various satellites and both DVR tuners.

Fill in your readings for each satellite and tuner using these examples. A properly aligned dish will show 80-90s on most of the relevant transponders (although some will be low or zero):
