Playback freezing mid stream, HR20-700

On a couple occasions recently (latest was last night) I will be watching a recorded show and the playback will suddenly lock up and not go forward. The only way to get it to go forward is to back up 5 or 10 seconds or so, then hit the 30 seconmd skip over the bad spot. I was watching the movie White Squall on Starz last night (live TV but 5 or 10 minutes behind) and it did this at least 5 times.

Any idea what this is about? Weather/signal was good.

I just had that happen to two of my precious HR20-700s. Apparently once they start doing that, they don't stop. I do believe that hooking up a cheap HDMI switcher caused the problems on mine. Did you add anything to your "system" recently?

In my case, both HRs would lockup and once I got them going again, I would go back to the same spot that they locked up on and they both played right thru. Happened every time. Wasn't the hard drive or it would have locked up in the same place every time. And none of the recordings that preceded hooking up the cheap HDMI switcher locked up at all, only those recorded after the switcher was hooked up and even after I took it off and sent it back, the new recordings still locked up.

Now, I read your post and have to wonder if the switcher wasn't the cause. Nah. I'm pretty sure it was the switcher, and I'm absolutely sure that I will never buy another HDMI switcher.

Both of mine had been running pretty well for over a year. Had to replace both of them.

It have an Onkyo sound system receiver/amplifier between the HR20 and the TV, but that is all.

Maybe it's just old age. Seriously. And perhaps this locking up is a condition caused by length of service. Mine locked up on the internal drives and when using eSATAs. My God, this never ends. I was completely stable a month ago and now...
