I think that some of the other replies so far may be misunderstanding your quesiton.

You know that you have crop and stretch. What you want is zoom.

The most common example would be a High Definition (1080i) channel broadcasting a Standard Definition (SD, 480) program. I often see this on ESPN HD or my local HD channels during non-prime time hours.

What the broadcasters often do is pad the 480 signal with blank bars on each side (pillars) to make it broadcast at 1080.

If you are in NATIVE Mode, the HR-20 does not switch to 480 because the HR-20 is getting a 1080 signal. The outter pillars are bogus padding but the HR-20 does not know that.

What you want to do is zoom in and just show the 480 content that is in the middle of the screen.

If you have NATIVE Mode Off, you already have a Zoom feature. Just choose 480p resolution.

I think what you are wanting is an option in NATIVE Mode 1080 to basically switch to 1080i Zoom which would really secretly be 480p.

They already offer the 480p so there is no real programming invovled. This is just a tweak to the User Interface. They just need to add another way to choose 480p called 1080i Zoom . They need to do the same thing for a 720p Zoom

Suddenly they would be ofering a two whole new features with no work at all!

I wish it could do that too. I cannot think of any downside to it.

Thank you, that's exactly what I meant. Strangely, I have tried 480p and do not have a screen reduction, maybe a HDMI conflict with the HR20 and HPS5053. I like your way of thinking though, if the software is already in there, adding the option would be an easy fix and make the many HDTV owners that have sets prone to burn-in happy.

For those that say the TV has a zoom mode, strangely Samsung removes that option when using HDMI, and my two component inputs are in use =(

Or just use the zoom feature on your TV. I can zoom a 1080i picture with the press of one button on my remote.
From what Ive seen, most (I could be wrong) TVs dont let you change the zoom mode when watching a true Hd broadcas (or on a digital station i should say).
