Currently the PocketDish is the only supported external USB output device. The long expected USB hard drive support is still comming (June 2007 seems to be the expected date now).

I should have included a pointer to a current thread that is going on in the Dish General Discussion area about the USB hard drive support. This is going on at the CES show now. Check this thread for more information:

Thanks for the replies. Well I'm implying that if the external usb drive will be supported maybe the recorded shows could be used in some other media. It would be wonderful if you could watch your recordings in your iPod or Zune.

By all accounts, the USB output will be encrypted so you can only play the programs back on the DVR that originally recorded them.

E* wants to sell you stuff; if you could play back on an iPod or Zune, why would you also buy a PocketDish?

Keep in mind that you can't transfer HD programming from a DVR to PocketDish, only programs recorded in SD.

I have a 622, a 942 and a PocketDish AV700. Once I've transferred a program to the PocketDish, I can connect the PD to my computer and transfer programs back and forth -- but you cannot transfer from PD back to the DVR.

Not a glimmer of hope on that one. E* has stood firm on protecting content. The new USB drive will be encrypted - Pocketdishes are acceptable because E* made sure that the content remains "safe" from transfer. E* is going to allow other Archos units in the future (instead of just branded PocketDishes). But don't get your hopes up of ever seeing E* provide a path for getting the content off the DVR digitally other than to media that won't allow copies. They are extremely strict on content protection.

You can play content on the composite and component outputs and record in real time -- but that is it. You will probably have a good enough picture for a small screen, but you won't have the faster than real time transfer that digital can allow.

I'm waiting for the PocketDish to allow transfer of HD programming as well since that is 90% of my viewing. Anyone know if the new Archos models will allow the HD transfer downconverted to SD but keeping the 16X9 aspect ratio?

hmm, I was trying to find a reason to buy a Zune, and i tough that maybe the DVR would let me get the recordings out, but I think the zune will have to wait for a better reason to buy it ?

One Question for owners of PocketDish: is this device able to play DRM (protected) music from sites like URGE, Yahoo Music, etc ?

I tried to use my AV700E as a Yahoo Music device and it would not allow downloading to it. So, I suspect the answer to your question is no.

I guess you could just use the line-in feature to record from the 622 to the PD... but then it would be playing back in real time, which isn't an efficient way to transfer.

The other problem is that HD takes up so much storage space; it would quickly fill up the hard drive on my 700E.

My solution: record the stuff I know I'll transfer to PD on my 942, from the SD channels. Most stuff that's simulcast in SD is letterboxed, so you can use the zoom setting on the 700E and it fills the screen in 16X9 format.

Besides, on such a small LCD screen, I don't think HD programming would look any better than SD.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't know that the PD had a zoom setting. Also, I didn't care about the HD looking better but don't like the black areas to the left and right of the picture when viewing an SD program on a wide screen. I was more interested in keeping the 16X9 aspect ratio.
