I'm moving and i'll be getting a shiny new HR34. It's been a while since I've had to have a ground pole. For the newer dishes is it still 2" outside diameter? I'll be placing the D* dish directly behind a 6' fence. I'm assuming i'll need an 8' pole with 1' in the ground which will leave me a 1' clearance over the fence. Does this sound correct? I'm looking at the WildBlue 2in X 8ft 9in Ground Pipe (T9629) from solid signal. Thanks

Right pole-but in VA the frost line is 18" to 24" below grade. Set you pole back from the fence if possible based on the degree angle of the sat postion.

2" OD for the Pole - check local Muffler shop

I'd rather use a schedule 40 pipe instead of the muffler pipes. That should last a long time.

I guess you have to go up in the mountains to get a 24" frost line? The frost line in NJ is 18".

ANY pole mount needs at least 2 feet in the ground. If you only put 1 ft in the ground and then put a 28lbs item on top of a 8ft pole, it will fall over in about 30 days if not before.

The SL3-5 dish antenna are heavyer and bigger around then the old 18" and need more stablity.

From the sounds of the way you want to install this, next to a fence and all, get a 12ft pole, smash the hell out of one end, put into a 2.5ft hole with 1.5 bag qurikcrete, let set 24 hours then mount the dish.

Now you will have your dish on a very sturdy mount and will clear the top of the fence.

For what? Almost moved to Sparta years ago, nice place. I know that in the old UCC plant at the end of River Road in Piscataway the frost line number we used was 18". We always exceeded that by several inches and never had any problems.

Just called the township offices and not a soul who could tell me the answer is in the offices. I'll call later.

We used the 18" figure for underground conduit, might be different for other utilities.

???? I do not understand all the hipp about the frost line. ????

It has nothing to do with the frost line.

It has everything to do with the size of the device that you are going to mount.

The more pole you have in the ground vs the over all lenght of the pole and what is mounted to it, is what you need to worry about.

Remember, even the 18" round dish weigh's about 10lb, the SL3/5 weighs about 25lbs.

This goes for fences, sat antenna's, or anything.

6ft overall--1 ft in ground--no 6 ft overall-2-2.5 ft in ground--yes.

If the pole (fences, sat antenna's or anything) are not deeper than the frost line, then freezing and thawing of the ground will cause the pole to heave, so there are two issues here. The pole must be deep enough to support the weight for the height above the ground, AND the pole must be below the frost line. Whichever depth is greater is what is required.
