Pondering HD upgrade options

D* are finally making me get rid of my venerable old 5000 receiver which makes me think about upgrading to HD.

I installed my own equipment back in 1998 (currently using Dish 500, legacy Twin feeding 5000 and 301 receivers). I know I'll need new DishPro LNBs.

I live in an Eastern Arc market (Raleigh NC), but due to tree cover can't get LoS on any EA slot. I should be OK with 129 but still need to eyeball my yard to make sure. Since I can't get 61.5, is 118 an option for my HD locals? I'm guessing I'll need a Dish 1000 or 1000.2, possibly a 1000+.

Regarding the Dish'N It Up program, dishnetwork.com obliquely mentions that "additional fees" might be necessary if dish equipment needs to be replaced. Of course they don't provide any ballpark figures. Does anybody here have an idea?

Alternately, can local D* retailers handle Dish'N It Up upgrades? I don't have good impressions of D* customer service since they outsourced everything overseas and try to avoid them whenever possible.

Thanks for any guidance!

You don't necessarily need the EA dish to get your channels, only 61.5 since that is the only location with Raleigh HD locals. Using a separate dish, you may find it easier to get a line of sight for it. Also note: D* is the reference for Direct TV, E* is for Echostar (Dish Network).
Yes, 118 is an option using a Dish 1000+ for 110-118.75-119-129. With Raleigh HD locals also being added to 61.5 though, my guess is they will eventually be removed from 118.75.

Not possible with tree coverage. We live on a very wooded lot. I see the Western Arc slots only because of the thin wedge of sky cut by the street. I already run into seasonal problems with 110, so 61.5 is right out.

I guess I have to decide whether lack of HD locals is a deal breaker or not. I'm more worried about ESPN/2-HD since I maintain access to OTA stations. However, occasionally we carry our Dish out on the road in an RV so locals are typically very nice to have.

Thanks for the reminder, and advice.

Ugh, not good for my HD locals. There is no way I will ever be able to see 61.5.

What do you think DishNet's plans are for 118.75? Local HD access would justify investing in a + dish, but if that'll probably disappear in the future...

I appreciate your advice.

Any idea about this? I suspect some licensed Dish retailers prowl these forae...

Perhaps I'll contact DirecTV and see what sort of deal they can cut for a new customer. I've been very happy with DishNet for the last decade, but I'm not terribly keen on paying for an entirely new reception plant just to stick with them.
Maybe if you threaten to leave, they will give you a better offer, so I would schedule your E* service to be cut in a couple of weeks. Then, after a week, call D* to schedule an installation if E* doesn't try to give you a better offer.

Hmm, does that tactic generally work? It would be nice if the first tier CSR would just bump me to a retention specialist who'd make it all good. Unfortunately, my few CSR calls since the phones got directed overseas have been very painful.

I'm currently on a yearly subscription and want to come up with a plan long before it is due (I think next March).

Thanks for the suggestion.
