I am having an issue with my R15-300. Tuner 2 will not work. Signal strength is zero on all sats and I can only watch and/or record one program at a time. I searched and saw that this is not uncommon.

I have swapped cables and verified to the best of my ability that both cables are indeed hot.

I have done the "unplug for 30 minute" thing, too. It made no difference.

I've also experienced Tuner 1 going from upper 90%s to 0% repeatedly. This usually happened during satellite setup while trying to retrieve the guide data. It would never complete this step. Unplugging the unit and switching the cables and restarting fixed this, but still no Tuner 2.

I suspect I have a dead tuner but wondered if there was *anything* else I could try and test on my end before calling D*.

Thanks!

If you have verified that switching the cables doesn't move the functionality from Tuner 1 to Tuner 2, then your Tuner 2 is likely toast.

Do you have other receivers that you might use to test with?

It's always possible that corrupted data in your DVR is preventing activation of the second tuner. Before contacting DirecTV for a replacement, you might try "resetting everything" from the setup menu, and even reformatting the HDD.

Granted, you'd lose all your recordings if you did this, but how important is a second tuner to you?

This is what I did to verify:

  • Set receiver to Signal Strength test.
  • Verified that Tuner 1 showed appropriate level.
  • Tuner 2 showed zero
  • Removed both cables and plugged them in one at a time into Tuner 1
  • Tuner 1 showed appropriate levels with both cables individually, so I believe them to be "hot"
  • Connected both cables
  • Verified Tuner 1 showed appropriate level and Tuner 2 showed zero
  • Swapped cables
  • Verified Tuner 1 showed appropriate level and Tuner 2 showed zero

All of the above leads me to believe that either:

A. Tuner 2 is dead
B. Tuner 2 is not "active" for some reason

I believe that I will try this before contacting D*.

As for resetting, all I have done to date is the Restart from the menu, then when that hung on Receiving Satellite information, a RBR.

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it.

This device is a problem child for sure. :)
