Hello. This forum looks like a great resource!

I'm thinking of making the switch over to DirecTV and I have some OTA questions. Even though I would get locals (and in HD) via satellite I would like to get them via OTA as well.

Is DirecTV only doing new HD/DVR installs with the HR21 and is there any chance in getting a HR20? If there is a way to get a new install with a HR20 how would I go about doing that? If I request a AM21 will I get one for free or will I have to pay for it?

Thanks for any help!

They will not be able to tell you in advance which receiver you will get. You might get lucky and get the HR20, but odds are you'll get the HR21. Since you get your HD locals via satellite, you'll probably have to pay for the AM21, but it never hurts to plead a case and ask.

:welcome_s to DBSTalk, fliptwister!

Install compaines are only being supplied with HR21's at this point. DIRECTV may have a few refurb HR20's but even if you could get them to send you a unit they could not guarantee you an HR20.

As for getting a AM21 for free I doubt it but you could call and ask.

I managed my AM21 for half off... It was a 20-minute call after I toyed around wth the HR21 for a few days. I did point out that my "old" receiver (Samsung SIR TS-360) had OTA. D* was willing to "split the difference" with me... So for $27 I got an DVR integrated HD dual ATSC tuner receiver... Worth even the $54 if it came to that (based on what even a low-feature ATSC box from Wal-Mart would cost). Others have done better (free), other are willing just to pony up the $54... It's your call (literally).

The way I understand it is there will not be a complimentary AM21 if your HD locals are available and they can only be ordered from DirecTV, not available in the aftermarket, AFAIK.
Might be a good point... I was an existing customer and did not have locals on my programming package, nor was I willing to change my package.
