Is a decision close for the multi-billion-dollar merger between EchoStar and DirecTV?

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell said on FOX News on Friday that things concerning the deal are nearly wrapped up at the FCC's Portals office. "We are close enough in our review that we could be days away from a decision,'' Powell said in an interview, as reported by wire sources.

He wouldn't say which direction the FCC decision would take concerning the merger.

On Friday, Reuters reported that staff at the Federal Communications Commission and personnel with the Justice Department's antitrust division are recommending that their respective leadership oppose the proposed merger between EchoStar and DirecTV.

The Reuters story didn't offer much new news compared to earlier stories from the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. Both newspapers reported two weeks ago that government regulators may oppose the proposed combination of satellite TV assets.

Still, observers on each side of the merger deal continue to say that both the Justice Department and FCC are continuing their inquiries into the deal.

The Reuters story compelled EchoStar to comment. "We continue to work with the Department of Justice and the FCC in their ongoing review of the merger," said spokesman Marc Lumpkin. "We believe the merger is good for consumers and should be approved based upon its strong and compelling merits."
