Could someone let me know how an HD-DVR install would work for a home built with coax pre-wired. It would be typical for only one line of coax to be run into each room, right?

Wouldn't the HD-DVR need 2 lines coming from the source (say in an attic or basement)?

What I'm getting at is that most pre-wired homes are prewired for cable TV, not dual-tuner satellite DVRs. Correct?

Generally speaking, most "pre-wired" homes are wired for cable, one coax to each location. (Hopefully where someone would actually put a TV...) :)

To solve that, DIRECTV created Single Wire Multiswitch technology, SWM. A SWM uses a single coax to provide up to 8 tuners with their datastream and can be split using high quality splitters.

Cheers,
Tom

I have an install scheduled for this weekend. Unfortunately, I can't get DirecTv or the installer (JP&D Digital) to budge on installing SWM even though the wall with the outlet is in the very center of my home. As this is a free MPEG4 conversion (new 5LNB dish) and I'm getting a HD-DVR free with the deal, is it possible to use a HD-DVR with just the one line installed?

I can then go and purchase a SWM module or LNB (when they become available) and install it myself. I would have waited but I'm on a time constraint due to the fact that I will lose the NFL-Ticket without the conversion :( .

Thanks all for your help!!

Yes, any DVR can work with only one line but you'll of course loose the dual tuner capability.
And you can indeed wait and install SWM technology later on.

I thought so but I had an installer at my home a year ago that was adament about the fact that the HD-DVR would not function without the additional line. Being a patient soul (with some things), and the fact that there were mumblings about FTM, I've just been waiting to upgrade until it was available. Now I have no choice :( . I just want to be sure if I get the same speech this weekend I can confidently disagree with them. :)

I would really like the functionality of the HD-DVR, even with 1 tuner, not to mention the fact that I'm paying for HD access for something like 10 channels with my Hughes HD-HTL.

Thanks Again!

Thanks, Tom. That's what I was looking for.

I currently have a very basic setup with only one HR21-700 (two coax lines running from the dish through my wall to the DVR). However, I'm in the process of looking for a new home and wasn't looking forward to DirecTV having to run tons of lines all over the house.

Does DirecTV install the SWM in a typical installation or would this be a more advanced install that you pay more for?

A year, or so, ago there were some issues with 1 tuner operation of HR20's due to firmware/software. There were quit a few posts about it on this board at the time.

It is not an issue at this time and, you should have no problem connecting only 1 tuner, if you chose to do so.

techrep,

Thanks for the peace of mind:D. Now all I have to worry about is how they are going to mount this dish to my house with a stucco sided/tile roof  .

The HR2x boxes boot off of the SAT1 input line so connect your single line to it. If you connect your single line to SAT2 input, it fails to see the satellites.
