Problem changing resolutions on HR21/100 since 0x5cd download

I have had a HR21-100 for years. I have always had it set to "native on", "scrolling effects on" and with all resolutions checked. Other than taking a little longer to change channels, it has always worked. About three days ago it quit sending video via the HDMI cable when I change from an SD channel to an HD channel or from an HD channel to a SD channel. I can get the video back in one of four ways - turn the HR21 off and back on, turn the TV off and back on, turn my Denon 1911 off then back on, or switch the TV from HDMI to antenna and back to HDMI.

In an effort to determine whether the problem was with the HR21, the TV, the Denon 1911, or the HDMI cable, I tried a different HDMI cable first, and still had the same problem. I switched the TV to antenna and changed from 1080i channel to a 480i to a 720p in all combinations with no problems. Then, I replaced the HR21 with a H23-600 from another room, and the H23 worked perfectly.

I reconnected the HR21 and tried to see if the problem was switching between resolutions in general, so I switched from ESPN to TNT and back with no problems. To see if it was a problem just with the SD channels on 101, I tried switching to NASA from TNT, and I had the problem. Once I restored the picture, I tried switching from NASA to DIY, and there was no problem. The problem seems to be limited to the HR21 and going to or from 480i.

An easy workaround was to uncheck 480i and 480p in the resolutions list, but since there was obviously something wrong with this HR21, I decided to call DirecTV. The CSR told me to turn scrolling effects off and to turn native off. With each of these changes, I lost the video, but I got it back by turning the TV off and back on. The CSR told me to change channels to see if that worked. Of course it did, but I had already told her that if I tell the HR21 that the TV does not support 480i or 480p, that solved the problem, too. My concern is that if the HR21 suddenly stopped working correctly when it switched to or from 480, there is something wrong with the receiver, and I wanted it replaced before it quits all together.

The CSR said that customers should always set native off and scrolling effects off, and since I no longer have a problem, there is nothing wrong with the HR21. When I insisted (politely) that the receiver was not having this problem until a few days ago, and I have not changed any settings on the TV or receiver in years so there is something different (and wrong) with the receiver, she had me to a diagnostic test (which I had already done), and there were no errors. She said that if there are no errors on the diagnostic, then there is nothing wrong with the receiver.

Is it coincidence that this problem started when the new software was downloaded on 5/30, or is my HR21 on its last legs?

It's a bug in that software release. You'll see numerous posts about it in the HD DVR Forum here. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next update. Using Component Video cables instead of HDMI is a sure workaround.
With this new software, I can't watch anything from my HR22. If I restart the box and the TV, it defaults to 480p, but colors are off and image is as if overscanned, any other resolution doesn't work at all. CSR at DTV was quite unhelpful and indicated that they hadn't heard of any sort of problem with the new SW.

There are a lot of problems with the new SW, but I have not experienced that one. Try unchecking 480i and 480p from the list of resolutions that your TV displays and see if that helps. [menu] [settings] [display] [TV resolutions]
