I added a 1TB esata yesterday ... I thought all was fine. Since install, on two occasions the screen has gone "snowy" and all the functions have stopped. If I try to change channels when this happens, the screen will blank for a second, then the "white-out, snow" returns. A reset has cured it each time, but no recording occurs while the problem exists. This makes me have little faith in counting on my recording to be made...I didn't have this problem before adding the external Hard Drive. The Hard Drive (Seagate Freeagent Pro 1TB) seems warm, but not too hot. I have heard that they can "freeze up" if they get too hot.
Is this the problem?? I have the Seagate in an open back cabinet, but it has been real hot here in the SF Bay Area the past few days. Any thoughts would be appreciated (as always, this forum is a great source of knowledge and experience). I will try with the Seagate outside the cabinet to see if heat is an issue.
Thanks,

Do you mean snowy like an old analog TV without a signal? I can’t imagine anything about an HR2x that could even cause that! I wonder if this is something to do with your TV. Maybe the HR2x is locking up and when it stops outputting a signal, your TV is somehow automatically searching its other inputs and ends up on the NTSC tuner?

The "snow" is a little more digital in nature...not like the old analog sets.
The problem is with the HR20...I can switch to the off the air tuner in the TV (Pioneer Elite PRO151FD) and that works fine. As I said, the HR20 sort of responds to the remote with a flicker when I try to change stations. When I push the reset button, the system works fine after the 10 minute reboot.
When an esata locks up, what happens on the screen? It could be if this is happening, the TV shows what looks like digital white noise/?

The first thing I would suggest is checking your esata cable.

The FreeAgent Pro is notorious for coming with an esata cable that doesn't seat properly in many esata ports.

This probably wouldn't cause snow, but it could save you many problems in the future.

I am using a "third party" esata cable. The Seagate did not come with an esata cable. I will order another to try from a different source. The cable seems well seated as wiggling it does not cause any changes. I am hoping it's a heat issue, and by relocating the drive out of my equipment cabinet I will no longer have the problem. It's wait and see at this point.
