I have an HR21-100 with a Segate 750 GB hard drive set to 3.0 transfer speed in an Antec MX-1 enclosure.

This has happened twice now. HR21-100 has frozen and I have hit the red button on the front pannel and it has reformatted the external hard drive and I lost my recordings. I have had the dvr about 3 weeks and I'm getting grief from my wife, so I need to get this fixed.

Should i just say the hell with it and crack the case and replace the internal hard drive?

Nothing seems hot, so I'm at a loss as to what is causing the problem.

I did call customer service and spoke with their "dvr specialist" and he had me enter a code on my remote that was supposed to fix the sluggish remote I had before the lockups, but ovbiously it didn't work.

And I got 6 months off the DVR fee for asking for help. I didn't even ask for the reduced fees.

Please help.

Welcom to DBSTalk...:welcome_s

IIRC there have been issues with using 3.0. Some members have had to reset the jumpers to 1.5.

These threads have a lot of good info.

I have the MX-1 with a Seagate 750GB on my HR21-100 set at 1.5 and have had no problems.

I would reset to 1.5 before replacing the drive.

Hope this helps. Let us know what happens. :)

Thanks for the reply. I'm goint to first test the drive just to make sure the drive isnt' the problem.

Thanks for the hint about 1.5; I must have miss read the posts, I thought I was supposed to set it at 3.0.

I put a Seagate drive in my Antec case and forgot to check the jumper. After recording a bunch of Olympic stuff I rebooted the HR21 and opps. All gone. I pulled the drive out and the jumper was installed from the factory making it set to 1.5. I removed the jumper, put the drive back in the case then recorded some stuff, did a reboot, recorded more, another reboot, and everything works fine now. I knew I needed to check the jumper, but just forgot. I guess I'm getting too old for this stuff.

Update. I'm having the reformat problem now with the drive set to 3Gbps.

So, should an external drive for an HR21-100 be set to 1.5 or 3.0?

Sorry, getting conflicting info.
I'm having similar problems with my seagate barracuda 1TB drive in the MX-1. Haven't gotten it to work yet, and am considering just cracking open the DVR and installing inside, even went so far as to buy a security Torx screwdriver just in case. But I also bought the eSATA cable that everyone talks about on this board, the SIIG 3.3 meter esata cable

I'll try that first. I also tried the drive in both the 1.5 mode and the 3.0 mode. It seemed to have fewer problems in the 1.5 mode, though both gave me freezes and unresponsiveness.

I'm probably going to replace the MX-1 with another MX-1 if the cable doesn't work. And if that doesn't work, I may try a WD drive instead of the Seagate. Then maybe I'll open the DVR and give that a try... that seems the most involved so I'll save that for last.

I'll keep an eye on this post to see if you come up with something!

Well I had to take my hard drive to work and run the diagnostic software on it. I hate having old computer equipment home. But anyways, it got a pass. So I installed the jumper to 1.5 and hooked it back up. It works, but we will see for how long. If I loose more recordings, I'm probably just going to replace the internal hard drive.

I have a Seagate and MX-1 hooked up to my HR20-100 with the jumper on (set to 1.5) , and it works fine. I read a review on NewEgg that the Antec has a chip in it that does not support 3.0 speeds, but when i mentioned that in another thread, I got angrily shot down (must be an Antec stockholder). I don't think there's any need to set the speed to 3.0 with the HRXXX. At least 1.5 is not a problem for me. i have never seen a spec anywhere for transfer speed on the HD DVR.

Disregard everything below... POS is still not working. playback issues, and re-formatting continues.

Okay, this seems too stupid to be true, but I didn't get past my first step. All I did was swap out the eSATA cable with one of higher quality, and the problems seem to have disappeared.

I can disconnect it and re connect it without the DVR reformatting and forcing me to lose my recordings, and all the freezing seems to have gone away, no choppy playback. I did have one instance of the US Open freezing, but it hasn't happened since. A far cry from the freezing multiple times per hour. And it may have been at the source for all I know.

The only other thing I did was to orient the drive vertically. I read on seagates web site that this drive has some kind of feature that makes it stable in vertical orientation. I highly doubt this made any difference whatsoever, but it's the only other thing I did, so I'm not changing it.

Good luck to the others who have been having problems with the MX-1 with the seagate drive in it.

Well I had a reboot due to me unplugging the wrong plug and the receiver reformated the external hard drive again. I couldn't take it any more and I replaced the internal hard drive. So far, so good, except i was recording something on the Science Channel HD and i got a black recording.

I find this totally unacceptable. I never, NEVER had these problems with my TIVO. I haven't even told my wife about that. If it happens to one, just one, of her shows, I'm going to have to go back to the TIVO. We mostly watch OTA HD channels anyway.

Time will tell if this is going to stay in the living room, or are the kids going to get a dvr with a couple of hundred hours of recoring time.

I've got 2 "green" WD drives in 2 MX-1s on 2 HR21s working ok, didn't jumper them. I did find that when I originally tried to test the first enclosure, that it had problems with my PC, found switching esata cables fixed the problem. Friend of mine said on forums for his time-warner DVR that problems with the esata cables were common.

I am having the same problem with the Antec MX-1 : if I reboot, all my external recordings are gone.

Lots of wife aggro. Unsure what to do from here.
I am probably over cautious about my external drive, cuz I have a ton of stuff on there that I dont want to lose, but I have reset my HR21 several times and never had a reformat of my esata drive. Here is what I do:

1. Hit RBR on the front (or reset from the menu)
2. When all blue lights are off on the DVR, turn the power switch of my MX-1 off
3. After powering down the MX-1, I pull the plug on my HR21
4. Wait 1 minute
5. Turn power on my MX-1
6. Wait 1 minute for spin up to complete
7. Plug in HR21 and wait for the reboot

You shouldnt have to do all of this, but I hear so many horror stories on here of people losing all their data I am overly cautious. I am using a 1TB WD Green drive, and have about 70% of it filled up right now with HD recordings.... I would get extremely depressed if I lost it all!:guck:

Okay.. so I swapped the cable with a SIIG cable, and that had no effect, still freezing and reformatting, so I exchanged the enclosure, and that had no effect, so i just cracked the darn DVR open and put it inside, and have not had any real problems yet... I think the HR21-100's just have a flaky eSATA port. Might just depend on whether you get a good one or not.

It really was no problem to swap the drive. I'm not even so technically savvy, and it took me only about 15 minutes. there's a good thread here on how to do it.
