For Chicago people - is anyone experiencing the same??

Am trying to determine what is going on with NBC and the Olympics. Am getting fairly consistent audio "burps" with slight pixillation about every ten to fifteen minutes, sometimes less frequently. Have had this issue with NBC in the past, Sometimes it is not there, sometimes it is worse. There are times when this happens with ABC as well, but less frequently. We do not see any problems like this with the national HD channels.

Am using HDMI, with my Sony receiver as the hub for all connections.

Any input would be helpful. Am really sick of this.

I get this with NBC-Chicago, too. Not just on the Olympics, but also when watching Jay Leno, etc. Even over the air, there is pixelation and stuttering from them.

Someone had previously posted that problems of this type are not hose of DirecTV itself, but of the local affiliate. Would really like to better understand why this is the case and what can be done to eliminate it.

Bear_brian,

As you no doubt know, there are a lotta links between the local affiliate and your TV, any can be the problem.

From what I've seen and experienced, often times the affiliate has the least amount of experience with HDTV and the problems stem from their end. (I've read the horror tales from some of the station engineers as to how things can go very wrong and be nearly impossible to find and debug.)

They can also be a link problem between the affiliate and DIRECTV's encoders sometimes weather (if an OTA type receiption) or fibre problem on a direct send.

And everyone involved, the affiliate, DIRECTV, and the fibre providers all vork very hard to fix these issues. They don't want them either.

I hope they are discovered and fixed very soon for you.

You can try calling the local affiliate. They might know something and be someone you can get a hold of.

Usually the front line at DIRECTV doesn't have that type of information.

Chicago 5 burps.

The OTA WMAQ 5-1 signal is good and has no indigestion.

Got a few updates, especially on Chicago NBC 5. MPEG2 OTA burps are happening at the same time as MPEG4 via satellite. Seems to be a station problem.

(That said, the MPEG4 transcoding might make the MPEG2 burps worse as in garbage in garbage out.)

Also the DIRECTV team is aware of the problems. I'm presuming they will be watching closely.

As an FYI - this has been and is still an ongoing issue. I've noticed though that the "burbs" are only when NBC 5 is broadcasting a national broadcast or its in the evening.

ABC7 also has the same problems with the same characteristics. Only have issues with national broadcasts not local ones.

it definently "burps" OTA as well. I thought at first it was an antenna issue but it always happens in the same location on the screen, on the right third about half way down, it will tile randomly for a second, so i suspected either the receiver incompatibility with the NBC signal or a transmission issue.

This is a constant problem and it is getting annoying. Hopefully it will be fixed by Sunday night football when the bears play the colts in a few weeks.


once this gets fixed and we get wciu in hd, I will be able to take down my ota antenna.

I have this problem with OTA and D*, I contacted NBC Chicago and spoke with their chief engineer(about six months ago?). He lives fairly close to me and receives his HD via OTA. I told him about the breakups but said he doesn't experience them Now I've had this problem thru my HR20-700 thru D* mpeg4 and my OTA going thru HR20. I also have the same breakups thru my Panny's HD tuner.Which makes me believe it's a problem with the local affiliate,but what do I know I can't believe the engineer says there is no problem,it's probably a money issue.I give up hopefully they fix it,but I'm not holding my breath.

You can add me to the list of people with the same problem with NBC5 Chicago. I also get the 'burps' with both DTV and when I use the OTA signal. As everyone else mentioned, it only seems to happen when a nationally broadcast program is on. I've never noticed it while the news is on.

The thing that makes it really annoying is when it happens, my receiver (Onkyo 605) makes a loud clicking sound as it searches for the audio signal. We end up missing 3-5 seconds of audio each time it happens. We sometimes have to plug the DTV directly into the TV and bypass the receiver altogether.

Same issue here. Luckily, I still have waivers so I watch everything but the local news on the NY feed.

It seems to appear when they broadcast the national stuff, but during local stuff, like the news, it is not present.

A Chicago-area resident tells me he hasn't noticed it on any of his TV's... but then again, he doesn't have a "full pixel" setting.

It's possible that this user's TV is showing more pixels then there is picture for.

As far as the original post, I'm told that shouldn't be a problem anymore.

I have had this problem on my Aquos LCD on NBC since HD became available here. It's always NBC .. Always on the left side. I've gotten to where I mostly ignore it now. I used to be able to shift the screen so that the yellow would vanish, but most of the shows don't allow me to do this anymore .. there is still a small band when I shift the screen as left-most as it will go.

All other HD channels do not exhibit this behavior. It is only on NBC which is channel 11 here in the SF Bay Area.
