So I have the basic remote with the HR20 (RF 34? I forget offhand :)) - and three times in the last two days it has just stopped working. The unit itself has not frozen up - I'm able to use the buttons on the unit to change screens, etc.

I changed the batteries twice - no dice.

I did a reboot each time, and the remote worked fine after that. However, I was just wondering if anyone else had a situation where the remote "froze up", but the unit itself was fine?

I suppose I can always call D* and request a new remote....

Yes, I have had it where the HR20 would only respond to guide, list, exit, menu, info and power, none of the navigation or select buttons would work. The remote was transmitting, the HR20 was not processing the commands from the remote. A reboot of the HR20 was the only fix. Others have reported this problem.

I've seen an issue where the HR20 seems to get "busy", and will either not respond to commands from the remote or buffer them (E. G. you press 2, and then thirty seconds later it changes to channel 2). Sort of like when you have a program that's "not responding" in Windows and you try to type something.

I've had this happen a couple of times recently, once when viewing the "to do list" and another when I tried to "dash-dash" delete something from the mini-VOD while watching live TV.

Both times, however, after about 5 minutes or so, things seemed to get back to normal after the HR20 with no reset necessary.

That aside, I've been much happier with my remote since switching it to RF mode. It's nice to not have to point the remote at the unit to make it work.

Remote is in RF.....

And becuase I'm a newbie, I'll go ahead and ask a stupid question - how does one go about switching to IR? Are instructions in the manual?

Go into the setup menu in the HR20 and select Remote. There are on screen instructions on how to reprogram it.

Ahh, thanks - I'll have to try that when I get home tonight...

One more stupid question - are there any "drawbacks" to this (ie, will my other components work OK with remote in IR)?

Everything should still work fine. When the remote is in RF mode it only communicates with the HR20 in RF and everything else in IR.

IR is the mode where you DO have to point it at the unit.

Oh yeah -- apparently the bugginess of the HR20 is contagious; I'm slowly getting stupider  . Thanks Paulman: IR=infra red. RF=radio frequency.

By the way - one downside to RF mode: when my 6-month old grabs the remote as babies are wont to do; she changes channels and manages gets to parts of the menu only Earl would know existed.
