I thought I read something ages ago that D* put out a signal that could be used to adjust the picture on the TV (colors, brightness, contrast, etc). Am I correct in that recollection? If so, what channel is it on?

I set up my TV (Mitsubishi WD 52725) quite a while back for the DVD player using the calibrations from a DVD, but since each input/signal is different, those same calibrations won't necessarily work for the input from the DVR.

Any suggestions on how to set up for the "best" picture off the satellite signal?

Contact an authorized TV repairman for your TV.He can access the factory adjustment menu in your TV and set it up for peak performance.I had this done on my Magnavox 50" RPTV and now I have channels that look like HD,but my TV is SD.Good Luck!

Get a copy of Digital Video Essentials or the AVIA Home Theater setup DVD. You should be able to adjust your set for the proper contrast, brightness, sharpness, color, and tint levels using either of these DVDs. Getting an ISF calibration done is also an excellent idea but it can be expensive.

Your SD TV cannot possibly look like HD after being calibrated but it will be closer to NTSC standards. It really is a crime the way most manufacturers ship their TVs. Virtually all of them come with the contrast cranked up full and all other settings are never calibrated correctly. Proper adjustment of the set is crucial for a good picture and it will also extend the life of your set.

As for the calibration DVD's, I've used them for the input from my DVD player. However, the HR20 is on a different input, so may need slightly different settings.

The HDNet info is what I was looking for, thanks!

I used DV Essentials to calibrate one of the component inputs on my Mits WS48311. Once I saw what the settings were, I used those to get the other inputs close.

Just did a search, looks like this is scheduled the next 2 Sundays:

Go to HD.net, search programming and search "test patterns"
Tried that last night and came up with nothing. :(
