Question about 16:9 output for 4:3 signals.

I currently have a R15, and am on the wait list for a HR20.

I have a 16:9 HD tv. My question is how does the HR20 display channels that come in in 4:3 format. Does the HR20 fill in the black bars and output a 16:9 signal? That would be preferred for me because my 4:3 display is a bit warped.

I don't like stretching a 4:3 display to 16:9.

I read some threads that described the 480i, 480p, etc. They gave me some good info, but I could not find the answer to the aspect ratio.

Thanks,
Ben.

PILLAR BOX will give you black bars on the side but the image will be the same as if you were watching it on a regular 4x3 tv.
ZOOM does not look well on 4x3 images but fine on LB 4X3 programs.
STRETCH will do just take the sides of the image and make it fit the screen.

I let my tv do the upconversion and leave the hr20 set to native resolution.

I would also try the stretch with your regular tv remote and with the 480 4x3 programs for directv and see how that looks.

Depending on your TV setting, I believe the HR20 can display the 4:3 channels any way you want them to display. There are 2 setup menus on HR20 dedicated to showing the signals any way you want - Display and HDTV menus.
