Question about Directv Guide

I have a question about the channel guide. I have an HR21-700 box and I hate to say this, but one of the things I miss since switching to D* from cable is that when you do a channel search for a program that is on later in the day, I don't see any sort of option to set a reminder for the show. Does anyone know if this option exists and am I just missing it? Thanks in advance for the replies.

thats not right....u mean if i select at 4:40pm the giants/jets game that comes on 7:00pm, then at 7:00pm the tv will switch to that game by itself ? something is missing here.

i didnt think u could do what the op asks.
Curt, can you explain? I didn’t think the HR2x had a “reminder” function. When I select a future program in the guide, I just get the pop-up menu with recording and episode search options.
The OP is referring to the Autotune feature that was on a lot of the older D* receivers, which simply changed the channel at a selected time. The newer receivers don't have that. You can only record future programs.
As posted above the HR2x's do not have the "Auto Tune" feature. Here is a thread I started a long time go about adding it .....http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=95103
Is it just the HR (DVRs) that don't do this? My H21 definitely does.

Maybe they figure since it's a DVR, just record the future program. Since the H21 doesn't record, it asks me if I want to Autotune it later and it adds it as a "task" or something like that.

That is correct. The non DVR receivers do have Auto Tune but the DVR's do not.
The philosophy is, if you have a DVR, you do not need to remind the DVR to tune it, in fact you do not need to watch it live. You simply record it and watch it on your own time.
Stuart I can honestly say if Auto Tune was ever added it would be the most used feature on the HR2x's that I use.

I would use it at least once a day and a few times on the weekends but I am probably in the minority here because I do watch a lot of live TV still (mainly sports that Auto Tune is great for).
IMHO, auto tune is a great feature for non-DVR receivers, however, the whole purpose for a DVR is to record. So auto tune isn't really needed with DVRs.
I don't expect to ever see autotune on a DVR, but I would like it for the sole purpose of being able to force the unit to a specific channel on the live buffer, without having to set a recording (which could be on the other tuner).

Carl
but since the new units do not have live buffers......
For anyone that does not think there is any purpose for Auto Tune on a DVR please take a look at the link I posted in post #6 and read through that thread.
Sorry, I didn't see anything in that thread to change my mind. If a show is important enough to set as auto tune, then why not let it be recorded?

For people that need to have a channel set as a wakeup channel then set up a timed macro on a universal remote. Or a 5 minute recording.

Is it really that hard to add as an option?

The Dish DVRs offer you three options: Record It, AutoTune It or Simply Display a Reminder.

I don't see how it hurts to add options for people that would find it useful....?
Honestly what I was referring to was not auto tune, but simply the reminder option. I've had Time Warner and Comcast back in the day and their mediocre dvr boxes did offer the "set reminder" option included. Sometimes I don't want to record a show, I simply want to be reminded to flip over to a certain channel if I'm still interested in watching that show.

BTW-Thanks for all the replies.

Yes they do. They have a single live buffer, instead of the two on the TiVo.
