I have a VIP722 with an external hard drive and would like to take that hard drive and plug it into my VIP 612 to get shows off of it. Will the DVR want to reformat it? I don't want to lose the shows and will plug it back into the 722 when I'm done.

Should be a plug-and-play operation.
If your receiver balks, contact Dish and have them re-hit the receiver with your personal account code.
612/622/722/722k/922/Hopper all should be able to share EHD's on the same account (of course you can't have a Hopper with any of th eother receivers active simultaneously, but that's a different fairy tale.
