Question about HD install

917 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  harsh
Hello....I currently have a 522 and a 322 and called E* to move to HD. I basically want to replace the 522 with a 722 ($50 upgrade fee) for the HDTV and move the 522 to the bedroom to replace the 322. I informed E* that I had a Dish 500 and asked if that would work for my new setup and she said yes, but they would have to add a "wing" dish for the HD channels. I asked her if the wing dish would point in the same direction that my current dish does since there are trees in all other directions and she told me that it would. I place the order and take off work yesterday to wait on the install.

The installer arrives and informs me that "we have a problem". Not only is my Dish 500 obsolete, since it's a certain type where the LBN cannot be replaced and there are serious "drift" issues with this model, but the wing dish needs to point to the east, which cannot be accomplished due to the surrounding trees.

His solution is to install a Dish 1000 on my roof where there are no tree issues. He also told me that the Dish 1000 would only require one cable per receiver as opposed to the dual cables that I have now. I'm pretty sure that the Dish 1000 can be mounted close enough to use the existing cables. He did not have a Dish 1000 on his truck since he was expecting to install the wing dish. He called Dish and updated my installation requirements and told me that I just need to call E* and reschedule my installation.

I've been with E* for about 5 years and have never had a complaint with them. I just wanted to run this information by some people who know of such things.

Thank you in advance

While you probably thought you were being incredibly witty when you entered your location, it doesn't help us evaluate what you need. It isn't often that you get an unrestricted choice between 61.5W and 129W wing dishes. There are currently only a dozen or so HD markets that can get away with this.

The direction the sales person told you that the dish pointed may or may not have been correct depending on where you live. In the Pacific Northwet (where we've had about a quarter inch of rain in the last four months), a wing dish should be used for 129W.

Either way, you're going to get a setup that requires only one cable to each receiver. The bit about not being able to replace the LNB on your existing dish is probably not true.
Sorry for not supplying my location.....I'm in Northeastern Maryland

We'll give you bye. The "Land of Pleasant Living" is actually a well known knickname (out here) for Maryland.

(former resident of the "Keystone State", the "Garden State", now the "Bay State")
The CSR was correct in the need for a wing dish despite not making the connect that if it's pointed in the same direction as the main dish it's pointless and not a wing.

The Dish 1000/1000.2 may be a viable option for your LOS issue, but it adds 129° while most of the HD locals in your part of the country are being put up on 61.5° which requires a wing dish or Dish 1000.4.
BobaBird,

Thanks for the info.

The installer who came on Wednesday said that I would only need one dish which would be a Dish 1000, but did not mention any certain version. He said that it was a recently released product, so I guess it would have to be the 1000.4?

They are coming back on Monday for the installation.

Thanks again.

It doesn't appear on any Maryland license plates I've seen, so I'm going to plead ignorance. Maryland is "The Old Line State". If it were "Evergreen State, Beaver State, Golden State, Silver State or Famous Potatos, I'd know what you were talking about.
