I have DirecTV right now, with 3 SD DVRs (R15) and 1 Standard receiver. The TV that has the standard receiver without DVR is an HDTV that I have an OTA antenna connected to in order to receive my HD channels OTA. I don't really want to upgrade my dish or other receivers to allow HD because really the only HDTV I care for are the locals I get free.

My question is this; Is there a way to buy one of the DVRs that DirecTV makes that can record my satellite channels and also record my local OTA HD channels by connecting the antenna directly to DVR? I've looked around but really have not been able to find the answer to this. I was looking for something that could for example record my local Fox in HD at the same time I was watching my local NBC in HD all from the one antenna.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

The new HR20 has OTA capability, but unfortunately it is not enabled at this point. Different rumors have surfaced as to when it will be enabled; October-December.

I've read conflicting reports about the HR10 that's why I thought I would ask. I've heard some people say it can record off an OTA antenna and I saw some people say it couldn't.

Is there anyone that can confirm one way or another for me?

The HR10 can record OTA, but its tuner isn't as sensitive as the one on the HR20. HR10s are no longer being built and the supply seems to have evaporated in some areas.

I'm sure I can get my hands on one be it via DTV, Ebay, or Weaknees. But what do you mean by the tuner isn't as sensitive?

The HR10-250 HD DVR's OTA tuners are four-year old technology. The HR20 HD DVR will probably have a better tuner, but we don't really know yet. If you're in a good signal area and use a good antenna, you should be fine with the HR10-250.

I use an HR10-250 for OTA HD locals and the picture is absolutely stunning if it is CBS or NBC (1080i), and ABC & FOX (720p) look real good also.

I guess that's what I'll get then. Just to make sure, I don't have to have the upgraded dish or anything in order to get that box right? As long as I'm not getting any HD channels from DirecTV I should be fine, correct?

One last question as well. If I were to buy one off Ebay do I just take the Access card out of my standard receiver and put it into the HR10? Would I have to call DirecTV and tell them I switched the boxes or anything?

Sorry for all the questions but I am less than a week into having satellite after years of cable and I just don't know the way everything works at this point.

You can move ac access card from a SD receiver to a HR10 but you will have to call DTV and have them "marry" the access card to the receiver. Just explain you purchased a used HR10 and want to use the access card from one of your old receivers. You shouldn't run into any problems.

Also make sure they flag your HR10 as owned versus leased. The default is leased. You can have call the access card department to make sure it's flagged as owned.
