I think that's the path most of us have taken.
I started with HD before the HR20 came out.
The cost will vary, but Costco I think has HD DVRs for about $168 and the monthly increase is $10/month for the DVR service.

I may as well just order from DirecTV, only 32 dollars more and they can install it for me so I don't mess it up. Do you get access to the On Demand Content from the receiver as well? I don't really care for it but it would be nice.

I'm going round and round with them on a similar issue.

I want to get rid of my buggy HR21 that loves to record black screens for me and replace it with an HR22.

They want me to buy the new hardware and pay them an installation fee up to $100 for someone to hook it up.

In order to get the VOD stuff you have to have your receiver networked in some way, either the ethernet port on the back or a wireless device if you have a wireless network in your home.

Which ever way you "get it", installation is part of it. DirecTV might sweeten the deal with some programing credits [but this varies].
Once you move to the recorder and network it, On Demand and media sharing from PCs are available.

 If my HR21 was defective, I'd be on the phone to get it replaced.
If I did want to change to the HR22, then I'd buy one [well lease it] and simply swap it for my HR21. When I called to activate the HR22, I'd have DirecTV deactivate the HR21 and send the box for returning it prepaid.
Now if the HR22 started acting like the HR21, I'd have screwed myself because the real cause of the problems wouldn't have been the DVR but the dish/cabling to the DVR.

The DVR service is $5.99/mo per account (no matter how many DVRs you have).
