I just recently upgraded my equipment from a rca 420 to a dvr R15-300.

My 1 gripe is the movie Guide sucks bigtime. On all my older dtv receivers, when I chose to view the movie guide in the 200s and 300s I can at a glance see all the movies playing. But on the R15 it only shows like 3 channels playing movies. Whats up with that?

Its the worst movie Guide I have ever seen with any dtv equipment I have had since 1999. Its almost aggravating enough to go back to my rca 420.

Has anybody else noticed this or is something wrong with my R15?

Looks like the R15 only considers LMN, AMC, TCM, FMC and pay HBO, Showtime as movie channels. My Tivo units consider SciFi, TBS, TNT, Spike and more also as movie channels since I guess they play movies. It would seem just another instance in which we cannot expect the same results from the R15 DVR as we did from everything in the past.

One would think that somewhere in the hugeness of DTV someone has developed some standard classifications as to which of the channels they carry fit into each of the guide filters. Appears that's not so or the programmers can't update the tables correctly. Big surprise to everyone looking for a little continuity from DTV.

Also, welcome to the forum!!!!:welcome_s

What? Okay you're going to have to explain this clearer because I can to DirecTV when they launch the new receivers (starting with the D10) with the new GUI. Movie Guide?
I'm guessing the GUIDE -> Movies and Events filter.

Thanks. Looks like a lot of good info here for R15 owners. :)

It looks like the problem is the movies guide is not "dynamic" on my new r15 like it is on my old Hughes and RCA IRD's. I like to see what movies are playing in the 200s and 300s at a glance. I can't do that on the r15. It should not matter if its classified as a "movie channel"? I like to see what movies are currently available to watch at a glance. Thats the way every dtv ird I have had in the past worked?

Trying to find movies is a royal pain in the ass on the r 15. I have to slowly scroll thru all the 200s and 300s to see what movies are playing because the r15 only displays so called "movie channels" not just movies.

Maybe I am the only one that ever used the movies guide on previous dtv IRD's? I did a search but could not find anybody else complaining about the r15 crap movie guide.

Right. thats the problem the closest option I could find is "Movie & Event Channels". Its worthless. There should be a plain old "Movies Guide". But there is nothing like that. Now that I look at it the "sports channels" options is worthless to. It only displays so called "Sports Channels" same problem? The R15 guide options is just horrible.

Awww, those are the gude filters that come from DirecTV. It isn't really an R15 "problem," it's a guide information "problem." What you could try is (while in the guide) Menu > Category Search > Movies > Whatever... or just go directly to the channel.

You can also contact DirecTV and tell them what you think, and they may update the guide info to reflect that.

On the R15, when you press Guide>Movies, it shows you movie channels. On my old DTV receiver, when I selected Guide>Movie Filter, it displayed a grid guide showing only programs which were classified as movies, no matter what channel they are on. It isn't really a channel classification issue. It is the new filter filters by channel, while the old filter filtered by program.

The closest you can get to that on the R15 is to do a category search ... but that will show movies in a list format (not the grid guide format) and it will show them for all channels (not only the channels you receive, or the channels you have selected as your favorites).

I still want an over-ride on the guide. I don't have any movie channels or PPV in my Custom Guide and it is a PITA to have to go back to the All Channels to see what I want.

My old Sony B55 was capable of that. It seems to me the designers have moved backwards.

It's not so much of where it comes from, it's that it's a static list of channels. That is the fault of the R15 and it's design/software.

As a work-around, you could build a custom favorites of those channels you want to skim.
That's still a static list. That still misses the fact that Tivo Guide Filter <> R15 Guide Filter. Tivo's is dynamic in the sense that if you choose "Movies" the channels listed in your guide are only ones that are currently playing a movie or will be playing a move in the next 24 hours (I think it's 24 hours). For example, Comedy Central shows up because a movie will be playing at 3:30. In the guide those shows on CC that are not movies show up as black. Movies show up as blue. This same logic applies to all Tivo filters. If you want to see only channels with football games on in the next 24 hours you apply that filter. If you want to see just Horror shows in the next 24 hours you apply that filter. Building a custom list or using the R15 guide only sets up a static list of channels defined by yourself or DTV. I'm not sure if Replay or UTV worked this way or not.

Thats exactly right.

If the guild filter is not dynamic then its of little value to me and I would think a lot of others also. Especially when it comes to movies or sports. Its a shame that the useful channel guide Technology that has been in DTV receivers for 15 years was left out of DTV 's most recent DVR's.

I was also surprised that the R15 guide's list of movie channels doesn't include DTV's own PPV channels! After all, if I'm interested in watching a movie, it seems like it would benefit DTV to show me what movies they are offering.
