Just re-activated the R15 for the wife to use in the kitchen. However, she doesn't want a receiver on the cabinet, so I placed it in the washroom right off the kitchen, and need to use RF to control it.
Unit works fine on IR, but I cannot get it to accept RF at all. I have an antenna on it in the right connector, but still no luck.

My question, is it the remote that controls whether it is using RF, or is it the receiver? If I changed Remotes, might that solve my problem?

Thanks,
Errol

I bought a RC 65 that says it is a Universal Remote. I assumed Universal meant it could handle RF. Am I wrong? No FCC number on back.

An RC65 is only RF if it says RC65RF in the top left corner and has that sticker on the back. You should have searched these forums before you spent your loot. Then theres the RC65RX but thats overkill.

Yeah, sorry, that "universal" means it can control lots of different TVs and AV devices. Like samrs says, you need the RC65R to be able to use RF control.

I have a RF remote in the bedroom unit, that I always use IR on, what would it take to use it on the R15, and move the "Universal" remote to use in the bedroom?
Thanks for all your help.

It came with my HR22 that is in the Bed Room. What do I have to do to make each work with a different receiver, or do they just automatically work on anything?

Well, there's a bunch of FAQ's here and one that deals with remotes in particular that has instructions for what you want to do.

Basically, take the RF remote to the R15, go to the setup menus, and there should be a remote setup screen that will walk you through the steps. When you set the remote to RF mode, you'll need to enter the last 6 digits of the receiver ID to pair it with the R15.

I would like to take the remote (RF compatable) that came with the HR22, and program it to use on the R15, and program the RC65 to use on the HR22.

Well, I managed to get the R64 working with the HR22, but cannot for the life of me get the R15 to recognize the RC64R that came with the HR22.
I read the FAQ's, but didn't find any help except how to reset the RC64R to factory defaults. Don't know if that will help or not.
Again, Thanks for your help

You need to "tell" the r15 to expect rf commands through the remote setup menus. Then you need to press and hold mute and select on the 64r remote in directv mode until the display flashes, hit channel up and type the last six digits of the r15 rid and hit select. (It could be channel down I can't remember. One of those things ) this should pair the remote to the dvr. If that doesn't work either the remote is bad or the rf antenna is bad.

My problem is that I cannot get the R15 to recognize the RF Remote in IR mode in order to be able to change anything. I assume I need to get the IR working before Programming the remote for RF. Is that not right?

Good to hear;

However, write this down or otherwise make note of this procedure for future reference;

To setup remote in RF mode
1. Set slide switch to "DTV"
2. Press and hold "MUTE" & "SELECT" for two green light blinks.
3. Enter 9-6-1
4. Press CH UP
5. Enter the last 6 digits of the Receiver ID #
6. Press SELECT
Green light blinks twice.

To deactivate RF mode (return to IR mode).

1. Slide switch on DTV.
2. Press and hold "MUTE" & "SELECT" for two green light blinks.
3. Enter 9-6-1
4. Press Ch. Down
Green light blinks twice.

Even though you're probably thrilled that you managed to get an RF remote to work with your R15, there is a little secret involving the R15 series that permits it to be set up to receive BOTH RF remote commands AND IR commands at the same time unlike the so-called "advanced" HD DVR's.

I LOVE this feature (as I have two R15-300's) and use the RF remote when viewing the output of the R15 in another room but an IR remote when viewing it in the same room it is located in.

Snoop around DBSTALK.COM for instructions to set it up to do this....

Yeah ... R16 can do it too I think;

Just place the R15 back in IR mode, then reset the receiver (or RBR). Once it comes back up to live TV, it will accept both IR and RF remote commands.

Thing is now, to never turn the RF mode on through the receiver menu again, or its back to RF or IR, but not both.
