Go to this link below to read an article about the problems and lack of features on the 501, I would hesitate buying one. Despite all the problems I've had, I think I will stick with my 2 dishplayers 7200's
The above link to the article does not tell the truth. It is missing many key points. The 501 does what it is advertised to do. Nothing more and nothing less. A good VCR will cost you just as much as a 501.
Since getting Dish installed on September 4th, I have not had the problems, and am fairly satisfied. As always, the product can use some improvement (ahem.... sevendayguide), but I don't see too many VCRs with 50 event timers.
I have been using the 501 for a while now and have been more than satisfied.
Echostar did a good job on this receiver...far better than DishPlayer.
