Really hard to read guide text?

Posting this here so as to un-hijack another thread I posted in...

I just got my new HR22, and I have it connected to my 42" Sony Plasma TV (from around 2002, Sony ke-42ts2u) via an HDMI/DVI (no HDMI back then) cable.

I can't figure out why, when I click "guide", the text that's above the grid/ to the left of the mini-picture is so difficult to read. Is it because there's no background color? Making the "bars" gray or "dark gray" helps, so it's clearly some kind of aliasing problem, but they're still worlds away from the rest of the menu text in terms of readability.

None of the other menus that get displayed as I navigate around (setup, manage recordings, caller ID). have this problem. And I don't think it's a TV problems, because none of the on-screen text on any menu-heavy channels (CNN, CNBC, etc.) have this issue.

I've tried adjusting the sharpness, contrast, etc. but it makes no difference.

We're talking about four lines or so of text (the word "guide", the channel you've selected in the guide, the time the program will be running and the line or two of info about the program). In fact, the line or two of program info is in a font/size/color that makes the problem less severe.

Am I the only one having this issue? It's really weird/bad looking and I can't seem to find anything about it in the forums.

Is there a reason that this segment of text has no background? It's not like there's anything else displayed behind it.

anyway to see if another dvr shows it ok using that hookup? anyway to try component hookup? wondering if its the hdmi-dvi conversion.

My old HR10-250 had no menu text problems. But of course, the Tivo interface is completely different.

I can try component hookups, that's a good idea (I have a component cable connecting my DVD player right now - so it's an easy switch).

My TV's native format is something close to 1080i, so that's what I have the HR22 set to output. But just to be clear, changing it to 480p and 720p made no difference.

Again, 99% of the menus, text look fine. 100% of the picture looks fine. It's just the lines of text, in guide mode, above the grid and to the left of the PIG. Using "light gray" bars makes it more readable (as opposed to black or dark gray), but it's still ugly as sin.

I don't see the problem you're describing. No problems reading the text you're talking about, and it does have a background (white for the channel name, shades of light blue for the date/time/rating and for the program info).

Have you tried restarting your DVR? Sounds like something is messed up with your GUI, and that might clear it up.
Any chance you're running in 480 line mode? Have you tried both 720p and 1080i modes to see which looks best?
I'm definitely running in 1080i mode, and I've tried changing that format to no effect (well, no effect on this issue, can definitely tell the difference in resolution on my TV screen). I've made changes both by pressing the buttons on the HR22 and using the format button on the remote. They show up on screen, but it doesn't eliminate this issue.

I will try rebooting, since there's apparently supposed to be a background surrounding that text, which I'm definitely not seeing. And then maybe I'll try the component cables. If I have to, I'll get a new DVI/HDMI cable and try that.

I thought it would be an odd design choice to make that the only text with no surrounding background in any menu (i.e. every other line of text in a menu is encapsulated in some kind of colored/shaded background).
BTW - it's really unreadable, not just a little jagged. Without that background the best you get is like a dot-matrix printer blow-up of a GIF.

That sounds seriously messed up. Hopefully a reboot will fix it. (I had an issue with the GUI not showing all backgrounds on one of my DVRs after one of the software upgrades; it was fine after a reboot and remains so months later.)
potentially could be a guide issue related to monday that did not fully clear during reboot.
I'll go do a reboot when I get home from work (should it be RBR or another kind of reboot?) and see how it works.

I knew it couldn't be the right display (no way others were seeing this and not commenting).
Resetting (via menu) the box did the trick.

I knew that had to be some kind of glitch and not my TV (since everything else looked OK). But I never would have thought about rebooting.

Oh, as someone who held on to his HR10-250 until the end was pretty much in sight, I have to say the transition has been pretty easy so far (even for my wife). I got everything set up within an afternoon, the box successfully recorded a few programs, the to-do list looks correct for the rest, and so on. I used trick play last night on the debate (watch those dials hit the roof for Obama!) and it worked fine for me - didn't notice any choppiness of anything (this was CNNHD). I am loving all the new HD channels. I think I only have one program left that's in SD (Army Wives) besides the kids shows on Sprout, etc.

I'm still getting used to the remote, although that's just a muscle memory thing.

As long as I don't get a bunch of dead or missed recordings, I will be a happy camper. That's my main issue. 2 tuners, record my shows, play them back, let me skip commercials.

I'm staying away from DoD and Internet scheduling and anything that requires connecting to the network for a while though - just seems like a lot of problems come from that area.

Excellent!

Well, it is a computer. ;)

Have fun with your new DVR!

Though some people have had issues with theirs, our three HR2x units have been just about as reliable as the HR10 over the past year or so (there were some growing pains early on, and some folks still experience problems).
I waited this long on purpose - while I wanted the new HD channels, there was nothing inherently "wrong" with my HR10. It recorded everything I wanted, with the only exceptions being that one time the software upgrade caused random reboots about 2 years ago.

The initial reports from here and elsewhere were enough to convince me the platform wasn't ready for prime-time. The "din" seems to have died down a lot, although I read the CE forums and note that there's a ton of fixing still going on. Hopefully it's all fixing things that are mostly annoyances, and I'm not about to experience some buyer's remorse!

I will say that none of the swanky new features swayed me (DoD, Internet Scheduling, shiny blue light that rotates).

Really, it was when they announced they were turning off HBO and SHO MPEG2 HD feeds that I decided I was ready to pull the trigger. That and the free upgrade :)
