What are the Pros/Cons owning a receiver (Best Buy), or leasing one from Directv?

none.. they are both leases..
Might be easier to get free install thru Directv..

Even a purchase at best buy is still not an owned IRD. Same as a down payment on a lease.

Big con of an owned box: If it dies it is yours to replace.

What are the Pros/Cons owning a receiver (Best Buy), or leasing one from Directv?

1. As other stated, it's a lease either way.

2. The receivers at Best Buy and other places are only there for folks with existing accounts who want to do their own upgrade. New customers only get scheduled for a new install, and DirecTV brings the receivers on the install date.

Will they (Directv), ship a new receiver, or do they have to install it?

If you order online, you can probably have it shipped for “self install”. If you call and order over the phone, they will likely want to have it installed professionally. However, depending on your account standing, you might get a better price by asking nicely over the phone.
