receiver & satellite compatability - fed up with company

Hello. I'm new to this forum, but I'm glad I found it. I've been having a *ell of a time dealing with Dish Network's customer service. Sometimes I have to call 6 times before I even get someone who can speak decent English. Anyways, here's what happened. About 3 years ago my -ex-boyfriend wanted the service & in order to do so, you needed a valid credit card. I let him use my credit card, as no money was being deducted from it & there never was any money deducted from it. He mailed in his payment monthly to them. Anyways, 3 years later I decide to use the service & went & got an activation card...called to set up & I can't do that since I already have an account in my name (was stopped for non-payment 2 yrs. ago from my ex). Some how when he used my card, the service went into MY name. Now I have to buy all new equipment (even though I'm a new customer like everyone else that gets the new equipment) since there's already an account with my name stating they gave me 2 receivers. So now I go to Ebay....& I"m trying to get one of the Dual 322 receivers so I can hook up 2 tv's. Now how do I know which satellite to get to go with that receiver?? I really wish I could go with Direct TV since I could get everything for free & not be out a bunch of money, but Dish Network is the ONLY provider that offers the 1 channel I want (believe me, I've checked into Comcast, Direct TV, etc...). I'm really up to my wits with Dish Network, though, as I had to pay off a $100 bill that my ex owed (he's no where to be found, of course!!), pay a $25 re-start of the account fee, buy a receiver, buy a satellite (even though on their website they say they'll install the satellite for free if you move, which I did in all sense...but nope, they won't do that for free for me)..so now I have to pay $100 for installation & then the money for the satellite. (If I bought everything off of Dish Network..it would cost $300 for the equipment & installation....that's my reason for good 'ol ebay)..& of course there's nobody in my zip code to do the installation any cheaper. Please help. Sorry for venting...just really fed up.......

Sorry you posted so late in your attempt to get DISH. The suggestion would be to use DISH's system to your advantage, do you have a mother father sister brother that could move to your address for the purpose of using their name/credit rating to establish a new account? Once the account is established add your name to the account. That is basically what your ex did to you.
I would suggest instead of a 322 you look for a 625 and enjoy the DVR, yes it will cost more but it is worth it.:)
Thanks for your response. Unfortunately nobody in the family is willing..... I did just win a 322 off of Ebay for $56.00 + $20.00 shipping ($76.00)....which is pretty much 1/2 as much at least as they are in the stores ($149.00). Now I just have to figure out which satellite to get. Maybe I'll try calling a few more reps (you always get a different answer) at Dish Network & see if I can convince them I just moved & maybe I'll get the satellite installed for free..... ya never know with this company.

Do you know which satellite to get with this 322 receiver?

Thanks!

P.S. There's a "Dish Network Legacy Satelite Dish" on Ebay now for $19.99....is it worth it & will it work with the 322??
I sympathise with your position... and have known at least one person in very much the same (had an ex that left him with lots of bills to pay off himself after the fact and blew his credit rating).

Unfortunately, that is how things work though... when you allow the use of your credit card to sign up for an account, you are accepting partial responsibility... just like if you co-sign for a loan. Hopefully you learned the lesson of who and how much to trust and won't get into it again!

Did you call DISH with the R00# on that 322 to make sure it wasn't a lease and it didn't have an outstanding balance on it? If it is a lease DISH won't activate it because they own it and the seller didn't have the right to sell it. If there is an outstanding balance on the receiver YOU will have to pay it off before you can activate it.

Any DISH 500 will work with a 322 the receiver dosen't care wether it is a Legacy or Dish Pro electronics. The best is a dish 500 with a Dish Pro Plus Twin.:) :) :)
if you were dishonest - which I'm not claiming you to be at all - you could be just saying all of this to get a new account out of dish network because you don't want to pony up to the table and pay your past debts.

I've been burnt on the co-signer/good samaritan bit before... it's not fun at all....

But when you have 12.75 million customers you can't trust all of them to be perfectly honest with you (not only because most people are not honest) because there are thousands of dollars on the table if you give everyone with a good story or excuse a break or deal.

If I were you, I'd find the ex-boyfriend and give him a little "refresher" on how to pay his bills on time if you know what I mean.....
You need the antenna and a device that amplifies the weak signal from the satellite, and at the same time converts it to a signal the receiver is designed for.

So you need the dish antenna, and LNB, and have some what special coaxial cable (wire) going from the antenna/LNB into your receiver.

The dish antennas are rather bulky to ship which increases the shipping charges.

Most people buy them locally, cheaper than having them shipped.

And you must contact Dish with information from the receiver you just got on eBay, to make sure no money is owed on that specific receiver.

Hope you enjoy the channel you want. I use a receiver that records programming. I never have to be home to watch anything I'm interested in. I record everything now, and enjoy skipping every commercial.

Ohhhh.

I forgot to under score. Make sure the antenna they set up for you receives the channel you want.

There are a few channels in the "Top 60" package that a "normal" Dish antenna doesn't receive. No one at Dish tells you that.

If you post what channel and package you want, someone here can tell you exactly what you need.

Creative thinking time. Find out if the 322 is free and clear. If it is thank them then hang and call in again. Say that you have moved and need a new dish but you want to upgrade to the DVR. By the time that you pay for a Dish 500 (don't get the legacy it would work but is old technology) then have someone install and peak it. You will be paying more than the $100 install that you have mentioned. Also you will have a new dish and warranty on the new equipment. You have no guarantee that the one you got of ebay will last a week.
The 322 is compatible with all Dish satellites and LNB/switch setups. Which satellite carries your must-have channel? What other programming do you have (AT180? locals from where?)? That will determine which dish(es) you need.

Wow, what a deal! Normally satellites are several million dollars. I would only add that (1) own your equipment (2) pay monthly (in advance if necessary) (3) never, ever give E* credit info/SSN - whatever - unless you want to have the same peddled around the Indian subcontinent. Unless you are a business where leasing has some tax advantages, it is a losing proposition and forces you to dance E*'s (or for that matter D*'s) tune. I don't know what channel you're after but it ain't worth the risk.

I've learned...believe me. If I had know the whole account was going to go in my name, though, I would not have done it. From my understanding the account was in HIS name, just using my credit card. I have done this before with a friends credit card & the account was still in MY name....different company -- not Dish Network.

If they only recorded everything (I know...tons & tons of tapes that would be from years ago)...then they could see it was NOT me that signed up the account.
With DISH the account name has to match the name on the credit card, additional names can appear on the account but the card holder must be there.

Right now new customers (which they consider you) are getting free HD receviers with a free SD DVR with 2 tuners, and free programming for major movie channels, and free ipod, or flat screen monitor for your PC all in the same promotion. So just let them know that you don't want your credit card attached to your ex boyfriends account anymore, and they have to honor your request per the law. Then clear that up and sign up for the new deals. You can even get an upgrade to the HD Vip622 DVR for $200, and they will give you $20.00 credits per month for 10 months to offset that deposit. Dish has no authority to grant unauthorized charges to your bank account for another customer, boyfriend or not. So they are not incharge of your finances. You own you bank account, stand up and don't let them screw you.:eek2:

How do I do this?? I tried & they said that since my name is in their computer, they cannot create a new account for me....no matter who made the account up.

If you read the beginning of this thread, you would see that the original poster here allowed the use of her credit card to secure the account of her boyfriend. In hindsight, this proved to be a bad idea since he skipped town owing money... but the simple fact is that she did permit this (i.e. it was not stolen)... so legally she is/was obligated to his debt when he didn't pay. It is no different than co-signing for a loan and the other person stops paying. They come after you as a co-signer.

From experiences of others I have known... and my own common sense, I would never allow the use of my credit card to secure anything for anyone else... except maybe maybe a close family member like a parent or sibling that I know and trust. Anything else is just a bad idea.

NO authorization is permanent. Any person can cancel anytime without notice!!! If it were left to merchants to decide... nobody would ever be out of any arrangement... come on people put on your thinking caps...

HDMe if you want to give permanent permission for the rest of you life for Dish to bill you, that's your prerogative, but the rest of us don't have to take it in the ass.

Clearly you are not understanding the original post. The poster here allowed the use of her credit card to secure the service for her boyfriend. At no point did she cancel authorization. Her boyfriend didn't pay, and she didn't think she was liable... but she did not cancel any authorization.

Yes, it is true you can cancel authorization to use credit card... but that is not what happened here. She simply did not realize that she was granting authorization when she and her boyfriend at the time signed up.

And who said I have given Dish permission to bill me for the rest of my life? I don't think you are reading the same thread that the rest of us (including the original poster) are reading.

If you use your credit card to sign up for service, and you default to them... then even if you cancel the credit card you are still liable for the debt. Similarly, if you permit the use of your credit card for someone else to sign up for service, and that person defaults on payment, then you are liable even if you cancel the card. This is just like co-signing for a loan... In order to get your name off of the loan, you and the original person have to go through a new loan qualification process to remove you and place the debt solely on the other participant. You can't just declare yourself not responsible once you have co-signed. In this case, allowing the use of her credit card to secure the Dish account for her boyfriend is exactly the same. She can cancel her card, and even tell Dish not to charge to it... but it doesn't make her less liable when he defaults and it doesn't make her a new customer again.

In this case, the original poster is not a new customer to Dish because they remember her credit card from signing up with her boyfriend.

I 100% sympathise with her situation... but legally Dish is not doing anything wrong here. She has just learned a very hard lesson about trusting someone else and going in together on a debt. Lots of people get burned every day like this.

You seem to be missing the point... and to her credit the original poster does fully understand what is going on, even while feeling that it is unfair.
