How does the HR20 receive updates--by Phone line or thru the Sat. Feed?

I'm asking becase I'm thinking about dropping my Land Line and just use my Cell Phone to do the calls. This is if I can find something to connect my Cell phone to my HR20.

The HR-20 will "only work with a land line", no cell. The downloads come through the SAT. With no phone there will be no PPV. Now the network connection might replace the phone line, but I don't know this as FACT.

PPV without phone SHOULD be possible via the directv website or phone call to directv (extra fees apply). No PPV via remote control.
Directv will support a no-phone setup for the hr20.

That is great news. With AT&T and Bellsouth merging they have promised naked DSL. I'm very interested in doing this. I don't use my land line at all except for my Directivo. I'm sure I maybe able to work out something to save me about $30 bucks a month on a phone i don't really use.

I got rid of my land line. The HR20 does not require a land line for most operations (and can't use a cell phone for any of them). The only thing you will lose is the ability to order PPV with your remote - you'll have to go on-line to the D* website and order the PPV there. It will send the authorization for the show to your HR20 via the satellite.

First of all..Long time lurker and 1st time poster here. Thanks to everyone for all the great info that I have received here over the years.

Just to comfirm how I am reading this... D* will allow the HR20 to be used without a active phone line. I am also thinking of dropping the land line and going Cell only and that was one of the things that was holding me back.

Do you need to have it 'activated' on a land line first?

Any more details would be most appreciated.

If you have the HR20 connected to a landline how often does it call out? Or does it even call out if you dont order PPV?
I think DirecTV's FAQ says that the units call out every night. If it does, your unit won't wig out just because it wasn't able to call out.

No phone line is required at ALL! Just can't use PPV with remote. WEB or phone order only for PPV.

Officially from DirecTV a phone line is required for all receivers. They will tell you that and insist on one during an install.

Technically the only reason it's needed is to order PPV via remote.
Also, although very rare, people with sports subscriptions can have trouble without a phone line. Again, very rare.
Tivo based units require a phone line to call into Tivo to report home and for activating software updates. If you have no phone it will annoy you once a day to call in *but* the Tivo will continue to function just fine (but you can't get any software updates).

A regular non-Tivo DirecTV receiver will dial out to DirecTV about once a month to report PPV. If it misses it's window after a month it will try to connect every couple hours until it finally does.

Again, that's ok if you don't care about ordering PPV with remote and you don't have any troubles with Sunday Ticket or whatnot.

Tivo's of course dial in more often, I think it's about once a week now. After a month of missing the "Tivo call" it will bug you once a day to call in, but the Tivo continues to function just fine.
