I have a 722. Currently I can't record on one channel and watch another. It prompts me to stop recording.
I could do this with another model receiver, how do I do it with this one?
Thanks

It appears i am in dual mode. The lights for TV1 are green and red. The light is just one blue.
It is not OTA, I was using the guide to change channels.
thanks

In dual mode:

TV2 can't record one channel while watching another, period.
TV1 CAN watch OTA (if antenna connected) while recording SAT or vice-versa.

In single mode:

Can record 2 SAT and watch OTA, or 1 SAT and 1 OTA recording while watching the other SAT.

In either mode you can always watch something already recorded. There is only 1 OTA tuner so you can never record OTA and watch a different OTA. It is always best to change channels via the EPG on first-time-channel-change to ensure you are using an inactive tuner, otherwise the "you must stop recording" warning might appear upon channel change attempt.

yes, if tv1 is your main viewing source, set the unit to record on tv2. I think all you have to do is enable record plus

If you have the reciever in Single mode (Press Cancel of the Right Arrow (Browse) key while watching live programming and look under the date and time in the top left corner, it will say "Single" or "Dual") you can record one (or possibly two - see HDMe's post above) channel while watching another. The only way to switch modes is via the button on the front panel of the DVR.

You certainly can do what you are asking no matter what mode you are in.

Mine is set to dual mode and I have tv2 as the prefered tuner to record to (it's in the menu somewhere, but I'm not sure if it's record plus or what). When I set a single timer, it defaults to tv2 and I can watch any other channel I want on tv1. If I set 2 timers for the same time, both tuners are being used, but I can still surf the OTA channels. This is setting timers for future programs.

When I'm watching the program live and hit the record button, I get a screen asking which tuner to use. If I don't select tv2, it will use tv1 and cause the conflict you are describing in dual mode.

If in single mode, after starting a recording of a live program, just hit pip swap to change to the other tuner and surf away.

Antknee - You can be in dual mode and record a show and watch another. I do it all the time on my 722 as it is always in dual mode. In the Dish menu go to preferences and set record to TV2 for default. All your timers will be recorded by tuner2 unless something else is being recorded which will cause tuner1 to be used. In your situation I suspect that something was recording on tuner2 when another timer fired and started using tuner1. Soon after that the tuner2 event stopped in which case the event in tuner1 continues on 1 until done. That is why you had a red light on tuner1 and no red light on tuner2.

Basically if there is a red light next to the blue light (maybe green I can't remember which is which) on tuner1 on your 722 you can't watch a live event. If no red light on tuner1 you are golden. You do NOT have to be in single mode.

Wow. I'd be confused too.

There are two satellite tuners. In dual mode, one is assigned to TV1 and one is assigned to TV2. In single mode, you have access to both but all output is on TV1.

(There is an OTA tuner. Let's ignore this for now since your question seems satellite signal oriented.)

In dual mode, if the satellite tuner assigned to the output is in use for recording, you can't watch something else live on that output but you can watch something recorded.

In single mode, if one tuner is recording you can watch something live through the other tuner. If both tuners are recording, you can't watch something else live but you can watch something recorded.
