After a nightmare with installers coming and making excuses to not take the time to install my ne 5 LNB dish, I finally got things working properly yesterday afternoon, 7 weeks after I made the initial call to upgrade.

The first thing I (thought I) noticed was that I only had one channel for each of my HD local channels that combined the SD and HD signals as needed. (It looked like I could turn to channel 7 and get Grey's Anatomy in HD or Oprah in SD automatically depending on how it is broadcast.

I thought "This is wonderful, better than Comcast and trying to teach my wife that channel 7 is really channel 231."

Anyway, I got home tonight and I had two of each of the network channels, right next to each other. Plus, CSI was recording but only in SD.

Was I imagining yesterday and the "combined" channel? If not, is there a setting that I messed up when taking this puppy out for a spin and tweaking basic settings? If I was imagining things, what's the best way to ensure that recordings will be HD and not SD?

If your able to get the HD locals then you should be seeing two listings for each of your local channels in the program guide. The first listing is the HD and the second underneath it is the SD for each network. You can usually tell the HD because it will be the networks call sign W*** or K*** the SD channles will say 8n* .

For example in Boston:

7 WHDH is the HD
7 BN7 is the SD

You should have two channels listed. One is the SD feed and the other is the HD feed. They both have the same channel number. The first channel in the list is the HD feed, the second is the SD feed. If you want to record your programs in HD, make sure you set up your series link using the HD channel (the first one). You should also be able to tell the difference because one show will have the "HD" symbol in the guide. Hope that helps.:)

As the others have said, IF you get HD locals via sat, you should have two listings. I will say, however, that when my HR20 was installed, the installer had to do a reset with D* on the phone to get the HD locals to show up in my Guide, even after my SD locals and all the HD package channels were active.
