Based on the guide data DirecTV gets from 3rd party providers. Sometimes repeat programs aren't marked as repeats in this data feed and so the HR20 will record them. Not much can be done about this, not really DirecTV's fault.

Does anyone know how the hr20 decides whether an episode is a repeat? It seems like it sometimes records repeats when it isn't supposed to. Thanks
not sure but my suspicion is based on its histroy since I had a series link set up for my SD local and moved it to my OTA HD local and it recorded stuff. Also noticed guide on SD channel said repeat yet on OTA guide didnt.

So are you saying that it does a text search on the listing for the word "Repeat" and decides based on that? My old tivos went by whether it had been viewed and deleted before on my unit.

That was the "28 Day Rule"... that was TiVo "fix" to shows that where not properly flagged as First Run/Repeats

There is a flag in the data stream that denotes if it is a Re-Run.
There is also a first-air date (which TiVo also used to determin first runs).

The HR20 does a pretty fair-good job at determining first runs/repeats
