rent PPV over ethernet?

1492 Views 10 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Mike Bertelson
Dish lets the ethernet be equal to a phone line in which it should be. They should have that technology by now. DTV says you need a phone line to rent PPV's. Is there any way around it since i dont have a land line? having it hooked to ethernet should be good enough i would think. i dont want to go online to rent movies i want to rent from my remote.

You can if you have an ethernet connection to your DirecTV box...

I haven't had a telephone line connected to a receiver since I got HD boxes with ethernet connections... no problems at all.

Same here, no problems at all ordering PPV over the ethernet/internet connection.

Agreed, when I order PPV using only an ethernet connection with my remote, the charge shows up on my account on line almost immediately. No phone connection is needed, DTV still shows that on their contracts and on their website, but it is obviously outdated information.
I have two DVRs, both networked, neither has a phone line. Both can order PPV through the remote control.

There can be a snag, though. I bought a DVR through a non-DirecTV vendor. When I activated it, it didn't automatically get authorized for "interactive PPV" and I would get message 733 (I think). This took a couple of phone calls to solve.

The first CSR was clueless, but the second one knew how to authorize interactive PPV.

If you have it hooked up via Ethernet, you don't need phone line... It replaces it. The only reason to have a phone line when you have Ethernet hooked up is for caller id...
Thanks guys for your help. I will call and get it done.

I just went through this with DirecTV. The rep knew about the Interactive PPV flag, but he was very hesitant to turn it on because I didn't have a phone line. He was completely unaware that the HR20 could do PPV through a broadband connection, and his extensive "documentation" didn't shed any light on this, either.

I really wish DirecTV would provide better training to their CSRs. Maybe their 1st day of training should consist of "go to DBSTalk.com and read everything you can..."

We are so much smarter than Directv CSR's as most times. CSR= Crazy Service Representaives. They should be DSR's= Dumb service reps

I couldn't agree with the two of you more. Think of it this way-who has a greater amount of knowledge...a clueless CSR or tens of thousands of amazingly bright and insightful D* enthusiasts and insiders, AKA DBSTalkers? Two heads are better than one, or in this case, thousands of heads are better than one! :D
Just did a PPV last night and it's already listed on my account.

No phone just ethernet.
