resolution format question

I just had an HR 20 installed yesterday. Took me four installation dates, but they finally came through. I haven't had a lot of time to play with it yet, but have been pleasantly surprised at how intuitive most of the interface is. Having been with Tivo for years, I wasn't expecting this easy a transition.

But (and now for my question), I had the impression from some of the many posts I've read about this unit that you could program it to only output certain resolutions with specifically designated screen formats for those resolutions. Perhaps I misread (or misremembered), but I haven't found anything like that yet. With native resolution on, I get the option to pick one screen format (apparently) for every resolution. With native off, I seem to just have the option to cycle through every resolution with every available screen format. Being able to settle on which formats look best for which resolution (especially for SD) would be a plus. Is there a way to do that?

Native ON/OFF comes down to do if you believe your TV has a better scalar than the settop box. I believe the former does.....HOWEVER....while the HR20 is still getting all these issues I'm leaving it OFF and forcing the conversion thru the HR20. My thought on this is that the box is decoding MPEG and syncing audio....there is no reason at that point to mess with the output. My guess is that Native Rez passthrough causes a more complex support internally of audio sync.

This all just a guess based on past design experience....there is nothing to confirm this theory.
