Resolution Tips for HR21 on Standard Def TV

Hi-
I have a Sharp 4:3 Analog CRT set with a 3 line digital filter + Component inputs. I recently connected an HR21-700 to it (for the extra hard drive space, not in hopes of getting high def). But in doing so, was a little surprised that the Sharp was able to display signals sent from the HR21 in all 4 resolutions (480i, 480p, 720P, and 1080i). It of course must be doing some sort of down converting along the way. My question is, is there any advantage in telling the HR21 that my TV can indeed display higher resolution? or is recording a high def channel vs standard def counterpart just wasting my hard drive space? With some limited experiments I didn't notice much difference, but I haven't hooked up component inputs yet either. The model is 32F641 from 2005/2006.

Your TV may accept the higher resolutions but if you can see no difference in picture quality, by all means tune the SD channel and use 1/4 the drive space for recording.

Just reread and noticed you have not hooked up component, so you were using composite which only outputs 480i regardless of the HR settings.
Unless you use the HDMI or Component connections, you are not getting HD resolutions. The lights and screen messages refer to those outputs.

With composite or SVHS connections, all you will get is 480i.
An HD channel that is output in 480i should still look better than the "standard" SD channel. If you can "waste" the space on the drive, your PQ will look better.
Thanks all- if the set is capable of displaying 600-800 horizontal lines like many analog sets at that time, would that translate into being able to use those lines for viewing something in 720p? Something tells me no. For some reason, Sharp doesn't disclose exactly how many lines this model displays.

Afraid not.
You need a set capable of HDMI or Component inputs that can accept 720p or 1080i to get HD.

720p = 720 lines of Progressive scanning.

Your set is interlaced.

The OP did mention his set has component inputs, but I doubt it would recognize anything other than 480i. I had a Philips/Magnavox set that had component inputs and it noted they were only capable of 480i. I tried a 480p signal from a DVD player and it would not show a picture. Even at 480i, the component signal seemed to look better than via composite or S-Video input.
