Subject: picture quality

This is regarding the distant network channels that I currently subscribe too through you guys. I don't what is going on with you guys, but as a customer of you since you started providing distant networks, I am getting disappointed with the picture and sound quality i am receiving on my san francisco locals. channel 5738 (ktvu) is like watching a vhs tape, 5734 (cbs5) the sound is very low, and channel 5736 (abc7) is double image.
I have contacted dish network about this issue and have explained to them that all american direct wanted me to contact them, and they told me its not them and I dont need to change my receive at all, that it is your guys fault. I am getting sick and tired of this price increase when you are not even providing picture quality for the price i am paying as a customer.

I hate to tell you this, but that's all you're going to get from AAD. Before I had high def, I used to get both San Francisco and Atlanta stations from AAD and the same San Francisco stations from Dish, all through my old trusty 508's. The AAD picture and sound quality were never as good as those Dish provided and they got progressively worse.

You know that customers in San Francisco and Atlanta would not tolerate from Dish the quality AAD delivers. It's clear their uplink system is not sufficient to do the job. But you never get anyone to talk to you can effectively discuss anything with.
Something has occurred in the last week or so, especially with the picture quality on ktvu2. Several weeks ago I noticed a minor whirring sound in the audio, but it wasn't bad enough to complain. However, the last week...extreme ghosting and color impurities are extreme. Ghosting is bad on 5 and 7 also. 11 (nbc, san jose) seems to be better. I too have emailed AAD and have not had a response. I know they were "planning" on putting these channels in HD, but Charlie's move to splitting the country in eastern arc, western arc, and leftovers has probably thrown a monkey wrench into what ADD can do. Unless, those in the boonies, like me, keep a dish pointed at 119. To expect ADD to offer HD on 2 sats probably won't be cost effective.

Definitely the last week or so, bad news on the picture quality :(
they should give us a discount with the problems we are getting 5 dollars per month, then after they got it working and all channels up to par with crystal clear sound and picture then charge the 11 dollars again, but dont rip someone off with a jack load of cow****
If I remember correctly they were holding off on investing in a better uplink till the pending court action is resolved. It is not wise to put out big $ on somehing that may have to be turned off.

DO not expect any improvements to AAD DNS untill all court action has been resolved. I think they had a win not too long ago but there may be some other action the networks are planning.
AAD 2 sats and transponders for the price of 1, maybe we'll have a chance of seeing Atlanta and SF in HD. Thanks Charlie...Eastern Arc/Western Arc and leftovers!

It is resolved. There is no threat against AAD or DISH for the current arrangement.

Whether or not there is transponder space to lease out for a HD distants service is the primary question I would look at. AAD may not have enough customers to justify the costs for such a limited marketplace (those who cannot get locals OTA Grade B and want some other market's channels in HD).
If I were AAD, I'd uplink the existing channel offering in the best SD quality possible the 16:9 HD feed downrezed and boxed and forget it. In the Eastern Arc, folks who need it would have to get a separate dish for 119. It's hard to imagine people willing to pay what it would take to provide East and West HD channels on two satellites given the limited number customers were talking about here.
for everyone in this forum please voice your complaints, i am going to make sure add see there are angry people out there, with what is taking place, ADD lied to us and never upgraded crap after the court what the hell is wrong with these retarded people at ADD...if i was charlie ergen i will just buy them out and offer distant networks again...make the picture quality better....and he can make more money for dish by selling dns to directv customers also, since they cant offer dns anymore as well

That would be ILLEGAL. DISH can't offer distants. They can lease transponders to others to provide whatever service those others want to provide, but DISH cannot offer distants.
up this afternoon. They look great! Picture is better than DISHs KTLA5, LA signal. For the 1st time I can recall there is no ghosting on kgo or kpix. Nice job.

Are you saying that KPIX from the distant networks ADD are now in HD?

Or the quality of your picture is better than the past?

I just checked KPIX and the Atlanta CBS feed and they appear the same.

Thanks levibluewa
but there's no ghosting on SF 5,7 or 2. Much better than its been in the past. And for the 1st time the picture actually looks better than DISHs SD KTLA5 superstation feed.

I see what your saying. I watched a recorded show prior to your announcement, and I did see the ghosting.

The quality has improved, I was just so used to seeing it that way.

Hopefully this will lead to bigger and better things.

Thanks again
splitting the country in 2 I foresee as a problem. AAD might find it cost effective to put the 8 channels in HD, but NOT if they have to be on 2 sats. Unless, of course, Charlie is willing to give them 2 for the price of 1. I bet he would! What do the rest of you think?
I live in Indianapolis and have actually talked to an employee or two from ADD, they are good people. From what I understand is that ADD now receives their DTV signal via OTA and uplinking. Visit their website about distant networks and learn more about the impending shutoff of DNS. I believe they will uplink and sell HD programing from ET & PT. from 129. Even a 1000.4 dish for EA will have an extra DPP44 port for a side SAT @ 129 When CEIL2 launches.
that makes sense! Maybe that's what scares me!

On Monday, 10-13, AAD switched from OTA analog to HD center-cut as source for SF distants.

AAD has used HD signals in Atlanta almost from the beginning, but they seem to have better receivers in SF, because SF looks better to my eyes now than Atlanta.

So there is no confusion: the satellite signals are SD, just as they have always been, and must always remain, for reception on SD satellite receivers.

But they look much better now because they are derived from an HD source, as nearly all broadcast channels on SD cable and satellite will be, NLT 2009-02-18.
seems to be correct in his assessment that future HD of ADD channels is tied to the new 129 sat. Lets all hope that Ciel 2 makes it up on December 3rd!
