I believe what they are referring to as 138 more HD channels is 138 additional Local MPEG 4 additions, not 138 brand new HD channels for everyone.
It's all in how they word things, very crafty. ;) There are more National HD channels coming next year, but not until the new Sat is launched and online, which I believe was pussed back from March to May...
Don't want anyone getting too excited or feel misled.

Does anyone know what national HD channels they are planning on adding? I was REALLY bummed this weekend when I couldn't watch the Cinemax Star Wars marathon in HD.

That works out to about 46 more HD LIL markets, right?

I think the retention specialist in question was probably retaining water on the brain.
100 by year end is what Rupert keeps saying.
Just to put that 138 into perspective...

Try naming 138 HD channels to add.........

There is maybe 50 tops... even less if you exclude the ones that are exclusive to carriers, such as VOOM.

They can't add them, if they don't exist

I didn't think Cinemax was available in HD period...?

Cinemax is in HD.
I heard 2000 by tomorrow.

DirectTV just keeps misleading people in an effort to get them to come over or to stay. Well those who do, get what they deserve.

The question to ask in response would be, "How many of those channels will I actually get on my current plan?"

Response: "Um, like maybe 30."

Good one.
I think a good ROT is to never believe anything a CSR anywhere within D* tells you, they're clueless. Believe only their press releases, since putting out a false press release can get them in trouble with uncle Sam, or what you actually see with your own eyes on your TV.

Maybe they are counting all the local networks.

If they are willing to put forth impossible plans in their quarterly report and risk an inquisition by the Securities and Exchange Commission, they'll lie to anybody and everybody.

Safe harbor disclaimers don't cover obvious untruths.

By the end of 2007 after successful launch of the next two Ka satellites, DirecTV Will have the ability to offer up to 150 national HD channels maximum.;)

You're kidding about press releases, right? I write them for a living, and if putting "false" information in a press release got you in trouble with Uncle Sam, half of the U.S. businesses would have their execs in the steel hotel. Press releases are even worse than CSRs for truth. At least CSRs are just confused. Press releases are designed to be nothing more than complete crap in 90 percent of the cases. Oh, they do convey info/data, but you have to weed through the spin to find it.

Thanks, Mike. Just to wrap up, obviously the next set of months are going to be really busy for us. You will see an array of things. You will see continued progress in our plans to really establish ourselves as the market leader in HD.
Other than a claim of planned HD LIL adds (now 12; down from a previously planned 25), there is little to indicate any progress towards approaching any of their competitiors; key to taking a leadership position.

The addition of 30 SD markets doesn't seem to be manifesting itself either. Remember that the time to uplink is measured in months and the cost is around $1 million for each market.
