Returning 721 Receivers

Just curious - I received the letter from Dish that my 721 will no longer work, and as a result, replaced it with the 522. They told me of the offer that if I send the 721 back in (which I own), they'll credit my account for a whopping $10.

On the other hand, these receivers are still going for around $100 on ebay. If Dish is planning on replacing the 721 receivers, why are they still going for so much on ebay? I'm inclined to sell this on ebay, and see what happens - caveat emptor...

Any comments?

By the way, I really like the 522 - the name based recording (which I also have on my 508) is great. And my newest bill is the same as the old bill - they did not make any mistakes with the lease fee.

If you will disclose the info ( actually you must do that to be honest seller ), the price should be around $25 no more.
721s will not work AT ALL when Dish switches to the new encryption system, scheduled for December. Nor will a number of other receivers, as Dish either cannot or chooses not to (due to development costs and other liabilities) upgrade the receivers to support the new purple SmartCards.

Further, they, along with 921s and 942, have been prohibited from being activated on other accounts for several months already.

People selling them on eBay are just taking advantage of the ignorant/uninformed.
I used the Hard Drive to replace a bad Hard Drive in a computer. That was worth more than $10.00 to me.
You did risky decision :( - the 721's drive life is short.
Better do that with open eyes: get S.M.A.R.T. data and run low-level diag before re-use it in PC !
They replaced my 721 with a 522 was going to keep it but sent it back would have cost me about 10.00 at recycle to get rid of it as you have to pay by weight where I live. Just another obsolete piece of electronics to have hanging around.
I think some could use it for parts; for sure I know sat-tuner chip is the same as in 501/508/510 and could be reused by experienced person.
I was going to call dish this weekend about my 721, on Friday evening Dish called me.

It must have been that CSR's first day. She couldn't get the computer to work (her description) and had to get help selecting my address for shipping out the new receiver.

The entire conversation was the following:

CSR: I'm calling tonight because we need to replace your 721 receiver.
Me: OK.
CSr: We will be sending you a 522, in a minute I will give you an ra number which is like your receipt.
Me: OK.
CSR: Do you want to have it shipped to you or would you like it installed for you?
Me: Just shipped to me would be fine.

---5 to 7 minutes on hold ----

CSR: sorry about that wait, I has having problems with selecting your address. Is there anything else I can do for you?
Me: Didn't you say you were going to give me a RA number or something?
CSR: Oh, yeah. let me get that for you.

---another 5 to 10 minutes on hold ---

She came back on and gave me the number and that was it.
That is literally the whole conversation although not exactly verbatim. Nothing about the receiver being leased even though i own my 721, no mention of any fees or waiver of fees, nothing. I wanted to ask about them, but honestly, I was worried that she would mess up my account if she had to do anything else.

I do not have a lot of confidence that this will be a problem free transaction. :( time will tell i guess.
