I switched to Directv last week. I have the RC65X remote (no RF) which sucks. My question is what remote was I supposed to get? Is the RF remote a $ upgrade or could I have gotten it at the install?

A while back DirecTV started packing remotes separately.

When they were packed together HD/DVRs came with RF remotes.

These days RF remotes are handed out only when needed or requested at time of install. Getting an HD/DVR no longer means you get an RF remote. Since you have already had your install, you will need to purchase one if you need the functionality.

the rf repsonse usually sucks. the IR mode is WAY better, unless your reciever is only like 10 feet away, use IR anytime you can

Move your reciever up higher or do anything you can before going RF. You havent explained the situation.

Im provided with all IR remotes, RF provided only if needed, but i explain the lag issue and bad response first before giving them RF.

Also i found out you cant put the Wireless CCK kit on top of the dvr if using RF, it causes the double button push syndrome. After readin many many threads on how the RF remotes will do the double tap thing, now ive found its related to other wireless signals

GO IR and wire everything you can, including cinema kits and all your internet connections. WAY too many problems with wireless stuff.

One guy had wireless: sub, rear speakers, bluray, cck, phone, internet, rf remote. None of his stuff worked 100% of time. Phone call would block out internet, netflix would block out subwoofer, rear speakers quit if using cck kit. Ya wireless is great!! NOT!!!

I had an HR34, H25 and CCK installed 2 months ago. The HR34 came with an RF remote, the H25 with an IR. Purchased a back-lit RF, antenna and mounting bracket from DirecTV. Put the H25 behind the TV on the bedroom wall, mounted a Samsung sound bar below the flat screen and hid all the cables in the wall. Remote setup mode had a good Samsung code. Works great. Quite aesthetically pleasing if I do say so myself.

Never had an issue with either receiver in RF mode. Keep my fingers crossed.

RF is only way to go. So sad that the installer has the discretion to give IR or RF. All new DVR's should come with RF!

If your remote is giving a problem with IR interference,
you could call them and tell that you are having the trouble and need to switch to RF but your remote will not do that.
They might send you one. It is worth a free phone call.

In who's world? RF remotes cost more than non RF and only a small % of people actually need RF. If at time of install receiver HAS to have RF because of location or in a cabinet etc.. then you get RF. If you don't need it you don't get it.

There is a guy on eBay selling RC65RX remotes for $7.49 including shipping. They can't cost much more.

I don't see your point here. DTV gives techs boxes of remotes and don't really keep track of them so they sometimes end up on ebay really cheap that doesnt tell you what a remote should cost. If the remote cost $5 for RF and $4.50 for non RF (just made up #'s as I don't know what they cost) then it makes good business sense to give non RF unless someone actually needs RF.
