is the h23 rf capable?

Yes. It has an internal RF antenna.

BTW I am moving this to the "DIRECTV Standalone Receiver" forum.
Hope it's better than the internal antenna on the H21. Based on the one we have, it's useless - works only to a maximum of about 7 - 10 feet away. The IR works better.

Do you have it in a metal cabinet or where something could be blocking it?

The HR21 we have in RF mode works just about anywhere in the house even on different levels. I even used it out on the roof when aligning the dish
My remote that came with the
h-23 is the rc64 and doesn't support rf. at least it doesn't work for me..
If your remote has the FCC sticker on the back it should support RF. I have an RC64 (thats what it says on the front) with my HR21 that does support RF.

EDIT: Must be a RC64RB as Draconis pointed out...but easiest way to know off the bat is to check for the FCC sticker on the back
The H23-600 receiver can support a RF remote but the RC64 is not is not a RF capable remote.

You need to go to DIRECTV.COM and order a RC64RB.

ist not mine , its a friend and he only has it a wooden entertainment system...nothing is really blocking it, no metal stuff there. we have called directv and they said they would "escalate" the info to there national escalations team and see what to do after that. the remtoe that came with the box was a RC64r

Not in a metal cabinet, just sitting in the open on a shelf in our finished basement. We had been using an H20-100 (with an external RF antenna) in the exact same location but needed it elsewhere since it also had OTA capability. It had worked very well in RF thoughout our entire house, from basement to second floor. We used the very same remote also so no differences there. Glad you got one that works well for you.
