Rhapsody Music Service Integration

1233 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Jeremy W
When I close Rhapsody music service on one of my networked computers I get a message on the HR20 saying the Rhapsody UPnP server has closed. I can't find any reference to the Rhapsody service when the HR20 is accessing the music and photo files. Apparently there will be some method to access the Rhapsody or other UPnP servers in future releases. Any know or care to speculate?

Don't read too much into the message. The HR20 is just informing you that that a UPnP server is offline. That doesn't mean that the UPnP server was sharing anything the HR20 could access, or will be able to access in the future.

Or at least until D* pays the piper (Microsoft) and becomes a "plays for sure" device. Correct?

That is correct. Rhapsody requires the player to support WMDRM-ND (Cardea), which is the DRM required for PlaysForSure network devices. It would be awesome to see the HR20 support this, because I am a Rhapsody subscriber. But I am definitely not holding my breath.
I currently use a wireless device made by SMC to access Rhapsody. SMC's description follows:
The SMCWAA-B gives you the freedom to play the MP3 and WMA music stored on your PC in any room of your home. You can specify audio tracks as “Favorites” by the click of a button, and then one menu gives you quick and easy access to the songs you listen to the most. In addition, support for the RHAPSODY™ Digital Music Service gives you access to consistent Internet Radio and a virtually unlimited collection of thousands of music albums.

SMC also has a newer device that has the same features but doesn't have DRM capabilities.
I think there is a capability to access Rhapsody services without the DRM restriction on the Radio and music streaming service. Perhaps the HR20 will only have this limited capability. This would be fine for me. I have Rhapsody installed on six different computers at various locations. I only use the radio and album streaming features.

No, there is no way to access Rhapsody without the DRM.

The following quote from SMC site (need another post to provide link) does not mention DRM and it is a newer version of my current device. I believe there are different services within Rhapsody. Some require the DRM, others don't. Probably not using the correct terminology but hope I conveyed the intended information. See specific reference to Rhapsody in following quote.

"The SMCWAA-B is a Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) device designed to enable simple and robust connectivity among stand-alone devices and computers. Integrated with UPnP connectivity technology, the SMCWAA-B plays MP3 music stored on your PC in any room of your home. For additional convenience, you can specify your favorite audio tracks as "Favorites" by the click of a button. SMCWAA-B's support for the RHAPSODY™ Digital Music Server provides access to Internet radio and thousands of music albums. You can even set up more than one profile on the SMCWAA-B to switch between network configurations. In addition, its built-in UPnP Server allows the SMCWAA-B to communicate with other UPnP devices, such as UPnP media server (Jukebox and Musicmatch®) or UPnP remote control."

Yep - I use Yahoo, so it's the same situation. The Yahoo Server, when running, will showup on the HR20 as a "Computer", but none of the files can be accessed or played.

I used to have Rhapsody, but I had to switch because for some reason is just stopped working - despite many hours of troublehooting to get it back.

One of the features Rhapsody had over the other services - was that it would stream bookmarked trackes and it's Radio stations to the device - not just the DRM downloads.

I imagine that the HR20 will include DRM support in the future - but I think that in order to be a Plays for Sure device, it has to support ALL windows media formats - including WMV. (which may also enable HD 1080p movie downloads and streaming to the box...)

Funny -

I switched to Rhapsody from Yahoo. I like the features on Yahoo, but that application, the Yahoo Music Player, that was painful to use. By the time I got the thing launched, I'd forgotten what it was I wanted to listen too half the time. (On my brand new machine - not some old P2 300 Mhz. mind you.) That player is such a hog - and so buggy.

hmmm. Nope. Not gonna go there.

They don't specifically say DRM, but that doesn't mean it's not there. They just don't say "DRM" because most consumers have no idea what that is, and they don't need to. All they need to know is that it works with Rhapsody.
