Roku is basically a little box that streams internet-based channels and Roku-created channels.

I don't know if Roku offers digital streaming, but Sony's boxes do which allow you to stream downloaded shows and movies right to the box from your computer.

Pretty cool stuff.

This!
Roku is presently smashing Apple regarding usage in my household. And there's a nice iPad app for it too.

Would it do better them my Samsung BR player ? (I don't need a Web browser for sure !)
I dont know, compare the specs. I need a full screen web browser (with flash) for those live news feeds (like the Colorado wildfires).

The Hopper remote can learn codes. Just go into the remote setup screen and teach it.

What makes Roku better than AppleTV?
Roku is AMAZING. The sheer number and variety of channels in addition to Netflix and Amazon is almost overwhelming. To me, Roku is like a candy store for grown-ups. (Seems like I even saw a channel for cross-eyed horny toad lovers. ;))

will ROKU (or other competing products) let you play movies and/or view pictures stored on your local home network?
Quite a few BluRay players do this.
